Id be putting my life and other peoples lives at risk theyve got an invisible language, you know. Flashing lights here means I might kill you. Stop. Or Go. You don't know... and the constant hooting of cars, its their language. Its a chaotic city and everything kind of works. MUSIC MUSIC HORNS BEEPING LAUGHTER HORNS BEEPING LAUGHTER CHEERING CALL TO PRAYER CHILDREN SINGING MUSIC Its not at all where I want to be. No idea. I tend to want to go there. Hell now take you? Hes going to show me the way. So now, we have to show him that we can drive Right, here. Were getting my drivers license. Its the second try, I hope theyre going to at least let me go through and try the exam. Because last time I didnt even reach the exam. I mean if I would have done the exam, I feel confident that I would have passed. You know, so I think the intention is what counts. You know, the fact that we came all the way out here, and showed our face, and So uh, yeah, I didnt even do the exam no Im very happy. The picture is terrible though. LAUGHTER Yes, Kaws gonna start driving, exactly. LAUGHTER MUSIC Where am I? We are, parallel to the Nile. I reckon, that were going to turn right here, no? Its pretty but MUSIC MUSIC SIRENS We came over as a family, we came over working for an American oil company. Weve been here for about 12 years. We lost our daughter in a road accident. We lost our daughter in a road accident. She was a pedestrian, out for the evening, She was a pedestrian, out for the evening, with some friends. My daughter started to cross first, she got half way across the road, and saw that her friends had not followed. She turned around to go back to her friends, and didnt notice the bus coming, in the fast lane, with no lights on and speeding, and she was struck. There was a policeman, standing near by. Um, he picked my daughter up, and um and took her to the hospital. Carried her in his arms, to the Al Salam hospital. So I put the pieces together afterwards, of course, but those were the circumstances that led to her being hit. You always think there was something you could have done to change it. She was a senior in high school, way too young to be killed like this. Theres no reason why peoples lives should be thrown away and wasted in such a senseless way. CRYING HORNS BEEPING CONTINUOUS BEEPING LAUGHTER Traffic is an issue, its a national issue. Cars are more affordable, part of it because public transportation is inadequate still! You cant design a city, basically, it grows it becomes. Planners, they look at traffic they look at 2D maps, and they draw lines no matter where they go. The past, 15 years, you see a growing network of highways and overpasses, on top of Cairo very much fragmenting of course the city and isolating drivers from pedestrians and public transportation users. Its the chaos that we see all over Cairo. MUSIC SIRENS SIREN SIREN When its crowded, and the siren is going The ambulance, it is ready 24 hours. And when we take the call, it moves from the hospital not more than 2 minutes. But the time of arrival, it can be less or more than I expect. You know the traffic in Cairo it is not an airplane, it is a car on the street. SIREN AMBULANCE DRIVERS OFFICE QUICK HORN BEEP So now that I drive, I mean I see myself doing the stuff that I used to complain that other drivers do. BEEPING HORN LAUGHTER MUSIC Congratulations. TYRE SCREECHING MUSICAL BEEPING HORNS MUSICAL BEEPING HORNS - You want to get juice? - Sure. Okay were going to go to a good juice place. See another thing thats nice, is like theres this whole car you can get anything in your car, smoke sheesha in your car, get food in your car. Theres that whole culture. And a friend was once saying that you know, its especially important for young guys, cuz like you know, you live with your parents until your married. So as a young guy, the only real space you have, thats yours I mean, if you can afford to have a car, is in your car. Thats where you and the boys kick it. I wish I could restart my life. Erase everything and start over. Even while sleeping, I worry. Its exhausting. Son, talk to people! Laugh, dont be so serious. I used to be like you, worried, in my head, depressed. Youre not optimistic about your future. You think its your fate? Wrong. It wont do. PHONE RINGING Allo. Whos going out? Ibrahim. SIRENS MUSIC HORNS BEEPING But I mean as an Egyptian dealing with other Egyptians its a little bit dealing with other Egyptians its a little bit aggravating. aggravating. People are fighting all the time, you see a lot of fights in the streets. You know. Definitely there is something bad thats going to happen really soon I mean I feel that. Could be in the next 3 to 5 years If Mobarak passes away tomorrow, this countrys going to go into a lot of trouble until, until someone strong tries to fix it. Know what I mean? Thats it. Tell me how you see that the future for the Arab world A more modern, more engaged, more entrepreneurial and more free thats the future. More free? More free. CROWD CHEERING CROWD CHEERING CROWD CHEERING CROWD CHEERING SIREN CROWD CHEERING MUSIC MUSIC HORN BEEP MUSIC I really want to get out of Tahrir. Go! Go! It feels different from day one of the revolution. It feels different. People aredifferent. Its the same organized chaos concerning traffic. The police didnt do anything before except taking bribes and money from people, in the street. which is like, every block you had people stopping you and asking for licenses, it was a bit ridiculous. And you documented everything? I did document, at least... Tell me how you did that. Just like Im doing right now. Because if anything happened to me, at least theres some sort of and nobody knows about it, because its attached to my scarf. You have the kids taking their photos on them, people getting married on top of them really think theyre merging with the people... What? HORN BEEPING My ears going to explode. Except for why the fuck are they selling so many flags you wouldnt think that somethings happened. The crowds and the traffic are the same. HORNS BEEPING CHANTING CHEERING MUSIC No empty space. CHANTING I really need to try and move. I have to focus on that. Because you see where the other cabs who were with us. You realize that if you stop actually struggling, you're going to just stay there forever. You know, we could have stayed in the same spot forever. MUSIC MUSIC Yes, the agricultural road is blocked on both sides. The ring road is also blocked from Mehwar to Agricultural Road. Do try to avoid at all costs. And Mehwar to October is literally hell. - Oh no. - Says Iman. Tom Green, with the big drive home from Vodafone. RADIO THEME Nile FM The misery is really high in this city, its a hard city. HORNS BEEPING But you see all these police, even the traffic police, they were not here until 3 or 4 days ago. What a fucking mess. What is? Egypt. DRUMMING LIVE MUSIC When the revolution began, it told the old regime to step down. BANGING LIVE MUSIC CHEERING RAPID HORN BEEPS SIRENS LAUGHTER PHONE RINGING LAUGHTER MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC PRESIDENTIAL ANTHEM SINGING So it would take me half an hour, to just park my car and walk to work and when I was already, sometimes late in the morning, and I was beyond late because of the parking situation. So I decided that I needed to get my own driver. He just takes me to work, and back. Yeah, no I cant afford to be late in my new job. So now Im much happier. And where are we going now? SCREECH BANG It's crazy. Oh my God, how did this happen? This is... I, I, I can't believe what just happened. Is the guy okay? He's okay. |
