Yeah. We'll do this take with Zoe now. Yeah, I do. Stand by, please, guys. One minute, we'll be shooting. Cameras are all set. All right, shooting, please. - Good luck, everybody. - Roll cameras. And lighting. Three, two, one, go! - Go! - Out! All right, check the gate. Zoe, thank you. People keep saying to me... "What would you do if you didn't do stunts?" And I seriously wouldn't have a clue. God, that feels so good. I don't think I could be a waitress again. I was pretty crap at being a waitress. Need the make-up. Can we bring the air bag in now? I've been doing stunts for almost fifty years. Whoa, guys. Be careful. - We'll work it out. - We'll work it out. It's all I really know, outside of being a Mom and Grandma. Retirement's not for me. And... rolling! Action, Jeannie! Cut. I like to fight. I came from that old school where you did it all yourself. I love what I do. Three, two, one. How do you answer people who say, "You must be crazy to do this"? Oh, I definitely think that is a piece of the ingredient. - Being a little crazy helps? - Being a little crazy definitely helps. It's a great feeling. Only-- oh, maybe once or twice in other areas... have I felt quite as fulfilled. The collaboration was so fundamental to "Wonder Woman". Looking back, you know--we kicked ass. There was a long time between "Wonder Woman"... and "The Bionic Woman" to "Xena". You know, Xena is half Zoe. I hate to tell you people that, but... I remember the first time I ever saw Lucy... was coming down a hill called College Hill... near where Mum and Dad live. And there was this massive billboard... with this big, solid woman... with this beautiful big smile and beautiful big blue eyes... wielding a sword and sitting on this horse. And I'm thinking, "Damn. She's cool, man". Excuse me, ma'am. Oh, my God, when I first started I was shitting myself... because I felt like I had only just got out of school... and this was the first job I got into. I didn't plan to be a stuntwoman. In fact, I didn't know you could be a stuntwoman in New Zealand... until I basically stumbled upon it. I've never had a job or done anything... in which I've held that much responsibility. Those are weird. What do you do? Shove them in your bra? - Yeah. Underneath your teddy. - Your tit. They're called "secrets". It's got a nipple on it! Bleek, bleek, bleek, bleek. So, I just stick it in here. Yeah. Ew, but feel--they feel like tits. - I know. - Is that the whole point? Yeah. OK, let's go in the back. That's fine, but they're going to cutaway to the section. Quiet, please. We'll just block through it. Here we go. - Set. - And action! - And cutting. - First guy goes that way? Swing it out and across. Yep, and block out. Rehearsing, please. Seize her! Sorry, wrong way. Pretty good. And resetting. I think that fame is what would finally do my head in... if I was an actor. See ya. I like being able to walk out of work, take my wig off... and be Zoe again and not have to take Xena with me everywhere. - See you, Janie. - Bye. OK. - Talk to you soon. - Bye. Quiet, please. People constantly ask me... "God, aren't you getting about ready to retire?" We are rolling! You know, nobody else lives in my body. They don't know how I really feel. I feel great. And as long as I'm feeling good, why shouldn't I be out there working? Yeah, that's good. That's real good. That's good, because... Is this wood up or down? - We've never met? Oh, really? - You're such a legend. Well, I've always wanted to meet the guy in the red suit. I love what I do. My kids are all in it. My Dad was in it. My grandkids are going to be in it. To this day, when I go watch a movie, I watch the credits. It's kind of a thrill to see some of your family members... or my name, or my kids'-- because we work hard. Jeannie came from a background of horses. Her father was a famous jumping horse rider. A lot of the reasons people thought I could do almost anything... is that I was Johnny Epper's daughter... and Johnny Epper's daughter came with a big reputation. They're famous. The Epper family are, you know, the Flying Wallendas of film. They have taken stunt work to the next level. They're real pioneers. In the bar fight in "1941"... there were Eppers flying all over the place. There were Eppers coming in from screen left... Eppers coming in from screen right-- they were everywhere. I've been a stunt man for thirty-five years. I met Jeannie Epper on one of my first big, long jobs. There has never been--I don't think-- as wild a group of stunt people as there was back then. Jeannie grew up with all that. She was pretty crazy. There are girls like Jeannie, but there aren't many. Slow down Baby Got my heart goin' round and' round You live too fast You got no class Slow down, baby Slow down Back to ones, please. Just line up. Just line up. Just line up, gentlemen, where you're going to be. Right about there. Very still, very quiet. And action. Cut. Nice work, guys. OK, Pete, so now we're looking at... Most of us don't do it for the money. You don't stay in a business all these years... if you don't love it. Well, I'm glad I got a chance to meet you before I die. The one thing I have learned about myself... and my ability to do stunt work is that... since I'm a Christian, and I've learned how to trust God... the longer I'm allowed to stay on this earth... the more challenges He has for me. I have spent most of my life as a caretaker... taking care of everybody else. I mean, I had babies. I had a baby when I was sixteen, so I was already a Mommy. As a woman, we're taught that we're supposed to still be... the moms and the cooks and the cleaners. And yet you're putting in a twelve, thirteen-hour-day. It really wore me out. It's not like my mom is just another stuntwoman. Everyone looks so up to her... and so I've got to follow in her footsteps. And sometimes it's hard. Let me know when you're ready, Eurlyne. You ready? OK. All right, Eurlyne. Come on. Hit your mark. All righty. How was it? I'm just out of practice, I think. She's been too busy having kids. When she was young and building her career... she was working a lot. And then, you know, she took time out to have babies... which is almost like a cardinal sin in Hollywood. I don't know, it just seems to work out. I've got my Mom. If she's not working, she can help me out. She's been great with my kids. Now do a seat drop. Do a seat drop. OK, now can you--oops. Jeannie's relationship with her grandkids is quite unique. Go on, Mathew, go! Go! - Go, Matt! Come on, Mathew, go! - Go, Matt! Go, Matt, go! Go, go, go! It gets difficult with the grandkids... because she's got four of them, and there's one on the way... and she tries to spend as much time as she can with them. Jeannie, are you going to ride, Jeannie? You have to jump this way. I'm going to jump that way. But I think it would work better the other way. Tim is my husband, and he's twenty years younger than me. Tim may have taken on more than he bargained for. It's not the right way, Grandma. You're not going to get enough speed. Yeah, you are. OK. I'm quitting. I'm not coordinating anymore. At times, Jeannie will get a little overwhelmed... because she tries to do too much for everybody. Our personalities clash at that point. I know a lot of it has to do with-- she wonders... whether or not she's getting too old to be in the business. I know it will be very hard for her to give it up... if indeed she has to do it one day. But if she wants to work, she can work until she's 105. It's up to her. When you're working on a full-time show... you're working twelve, thirteen-hour days... five, sometimes six days a week. It looks good, though. And it's hard because there's only... a certain limited amount of free time I have... and it's hard to sort of share it between friends and family and stuff. We've had some great times taking the videos of some of the stuff... the rushes of some of the stuff that she does as Xena... we give them back to her parents' house... and we can fill them in on the background... of what was happening on that day. Just do it and do it and do it. And they run around and around in circles. And the guys just have to get up. And they do their full "Huhh!" Then they get-- - And again! - Shh! Poof! Arg! - Oh, Zoe, you're my hero. - I know. Six guys at once. Six guys at once. Whoo! Well, actually, it was six guys, one at a time. If they all came at me at once, I don't know what I'd do. I remember Zoe would come home and say... "Look at this bruise, Dad". And she's proud of it, you know? She's always really enjoyed her body and known how far she can go with it. She's always been a bit of a tomboy. I was born and raised on an island in New Zealand... called Waiheke Island. In my memories, it was always summer. I was always on the beach. I have the most incredibly cool memories from Waiheke. That's so fun! I think what affected her career choice, mainly... was at the sweet age of two years... Andrew bought her an enormous trampoline. She just started to bounce away... and just bounced on throughout life... to the sweet little age of twenty-two. And three, two, one, go! And go. OK. Is that it? Completely sideways. Hey. I can do flips in a harness with my eyes closed... and totally know where I am. - I'm turning this way. - Oh, that way. But when you start getting any complications... you have to understand how the rigs work... and what the angles mean. Because it looks easy, people assume it is easy. Zoe will sit at the end of a string... for two weeks if she absolutely has to. And it's terrible. I know it's terrible. Originally, Lucy and Renee just cringed. They would dread the day that they had to get in the harnesses... because they cut so horribly. They just go up your crotch. Three, two, one, go! Go! Go! Not bad. That'll work. - That was better. - Fuck! Quick as we can, please, guys. Come on, whip it out, big guy. Full house. I've got to do probably two, if not three angles on it... in order to extend the flight, right? Two. I need to do two takes on each. And three, two, one, go! - Cutting. - Heads! So, there's enough spinning in there for the front. Yeah. There's a couple of things you're going to have to tidy up. Yeah. We just need it higher. So, it was lower or the same? Slightly, but not dramatically. So, what the fuck does that mean? It was slightly less powerful. And three, two, one, go! Cutting. Cut. Shoulder? Matty? You all right, Zo-Zo? Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. When things go wrong... no one wants to be seen to be holding up the production... and Zoe's the epitome of that. - Hey, Zo. - How do you feel? Yeah. It's just dead. OK, the thing is, what is--that time there... they feel the timing was out. - I left early? - You left early. - Yeah. You spiraled early. - Yeah. That--yeah. We'll work on getting this travel right, here. And three, two, one, go! Cutting. - You OK? - Yep. You know that if you set a rig up, and Zoe can't do it... then you know there's something wrong with your rig. Jam in the rope? No. It didn't feel like it was pumping enough energy. Good, but you might want to keep the number of times down... that she's doing this. It's just damaging more and more now-- the more damage it's going to be. Oh, we're just talking about how many times you guys want to do this. Well, we've said, "Lots". Well, we'll have to get those "lots" down to less. I think we're running out of time. Put down the schedule. They're still going to be discussing it... right up to the point where we start to shoot her. You know what I mean? - How's your arm? - It's all right. It is? That's a reservation I wanted to put it away... because it was only going to be going like that, I felt. Yeah. - OK. - Yeah. She'll never lie around on the ground... and make a big scene of any injuries that she has. And she's had a few nasty ones. The girls do have a tougher job... just because of the costumes they've got, you know? Just bare midriffs, bare arms, bare legs and that. And quite often they're doing gags where they can't pad up. Whereas, the men can pad up. They've got baggy pants, baggy shirts, and jackets. The first rule of women of film... is that they have to look good... apparently. Apparently, that's the first rule. They've got the low-cut top, they've got the sleeveless outfit. Where do you put your pads? Where do you put your protection? You don't. If you can't put it on the ground, you got to bite it and go. When I was doing "Wonder Woman"... you couldn't wear any stunt padding at all. But they did let us wear nylons. We got to wear support hose. Luckily, the second season, we had flat boots. The first year, we did not have flat boots. They made us boots that were like wedgie heels. I used to tape my ankles, almost like a football player. You just put on what they give you and do it. The dawn of the stuntwoman is a recent breakthrough. In those days, there were no stuntwomen. The men donned dresses and wigs and fell off horses. Due to the affirmative action of the seventies... women were given the opportunity to perform all the stunts. Now, mind you, by this time... Jeannie had already proved herself with the guys. Being a stuntwoman didn't delete from my femininity. I better warn you-- I got a black belt in karate. But I had the competitiveness-- to compete not with other women, but to compete with other men... other stuntmen. There were very, very few women back then... that could hold council with the men. They were told what to do and where to do it and where to go. As we grew, and there became more and more of us... we decided to bond together and represent ourselves. So, we started our own group. Girls, we need to move on. Actually, we have four girls who are up for new membership. I would rather bring somebody into the group... who's been well-established and has paid their dues-- their ass off in this business. You know what? I don't think enough girls in the group are working as it is. I'm not, I know that. And to get more girls in and to have them work... You know, God bless them, they're working. But you know what? We need to work first. You know, if excellence is what we're presenting out there... then we have to bring in excellent girls. - Meeting adjourned. - It's adjourned. - Bye. - Meeting adjourned. I was a size 34A... and I'm a 34B+/C, so... But I did do it for me, and as you can tell... it's not very big and not overly done. - Well, it took you a while because-- - Hopefully, it looks nice, you know? - They look great. Who did them? - Doctor Pector. Doctor Pector did your pecs, huh? Yes. He's done three other stuntwomen, too. Oh, wow. Well, I remember a lot of doctors wouldn't do her... because she didn't want to go as big... as they were saying you should go, because-- When I went into interview for "Wonder Woman"... they made all of us girls come in in bathing suits. You're not really ever you. You're mostly somebody that's more beautiful than you are. You're somebody that's younger than you are. You're somebody that's... probably got a better figure than you have. Jeannie was just the most giving, gracious... insecure... person. I think there were probably a lot of women on the periphery... that were younger, taller, you know? It's very cut-throat. The producers get younger, the directors get younger... and we look like antiquated old antiques coming in. My friend May called and said, "We got to get this liposuction done". Getting a little nip and tuck and work done... is definitely to help us keep on working. Under a normal job, a normal desk job... you might be off just a couple of days. Jumping off of buildings... wrestling around on the ground... you know, maybe you wouldn't want to do anything... for two or three weeks... because it'll be sore when you're rolling on it. What we want to do is see what you look like in your clothes... - OK. - and what we wouldn't want to change. - You'd want to take it right out of here. - OK. You'd want to take it out of your thighs. And then you'd want to take a small amount out of your hips. - OK. - And a lot out of the waist. You might benefit from some of this work... if you want to fix that. What about the stuff that grows on your arms? Are my arms that bad? I'm not sure you're really ready for the type of procedure... where you'd actually have an arm lift. But there is such a thing. And the incision would be made up the inner side of the arm... and then right in here. So, you'd have a little visible scar... and that could be tightened there. - The fee for that is 2,750. - OK. If you want me to do the lipo-surgery on your cheeks... it's only another $750 to do that. It's actually a pretty reasonable price. - Have a good one. Bye. - You, too. Bye-bye. So, it was a good price. But, darling, here, didn't have to go, "Oh, it's a good price!" Come on, let's get out of here. Well, this is the week... New Zealand must lose its most successful make-believe heroine. The final day of shooting for "Xena: Warrior Princess" is tomorrow. There's a slight feeling of unease... about when you're on the precipice of a huge change in your life... and you don't know what's coming. There's a little bit of that. But mostly, we're really proud to have been through so much together. I think we can take Zoe off the wires. For a few years now, Zoe's been asking me if she's wrapped. I think this time we can unequivocally say... "Yes, Zoe, you're wrapped". I wore the wig probably more than I ever wore my own hair, you know? And then to never be wearing the wig again... and to take the costume off for the last time was just bizarre. Three, two, one, the end! The end! That stuff was just so... a major part of my life. And then for it to all disappear all at once... I don't know, it kind of felt like the ground... being whipped out from underneath me. Like, I knew to expect it... but I don't really think you can prepare yourself for that sort of thing. Look at that one. That's classy, isn't it? Makes me get all gooey. Quite a few people have asked me if I'll go overseas or whatever. And it's one of those things where my mum, my dad, and my brother... are my three best friends ever, I imagine. Look at them holding hands. The idea of leaving New Zealand to pursue my career... totally excites me... but it also freaks me out... because they won't be coming on that one, you know? We now have a remarkable story of friendship, love, and devotion. Emmy and Tony-award winning actor Ken Howard... has come through a long and harrowing medical ordeal-- one that almost cost him his life. It was saved just two months ago by a kidney transplant. The donor-- his good friend Jeannie Epper. I know you were devastated when you found out... that you couldn't, in fact, give one of your kidneys. It was not a good day. Not a good day. Jeannie called the next morning and said... "Well, I want to be tested. I'll do it". So, I think that's the way stuntwomen think. She said... "Well, I'll just step in and do the stunt for you"... which is a real act of friendship and love. It's just the right thing to do. It felt right when Linda said she couldn't do it. And I hung up the phone, and she was so hysterical. I thought, "Gosh, I could do that". - It's a wonderful story. - Thank you. Thank you so much for being here, Jeannie Epper... The only reason I really hustled this year and last year... is because I don't want people to think... because I had donated my kidney that I was no longer going to work... because that's kind of what the flavor was. I hope you like herpes! - All right. - Cut! That was funny. Jeannie has hit the ground, I'm sure, you know... God knows how many times and gotten her cuts and bruises. So this is a make-up day... for all of those days that she bit it, you know? It happens to me-- you just stand around in wardrobe... and you kind of-- you don't get to do anything. Years ago, it used to make me nervous. When I was young and trying to prove myself... and wanting to get out there and show everybody what I could do. It doesn't bother me anymore. If I injured myself now... it would take me a long time to heal up... and I'm just smarter about what I do. I haven't had huge injuries for the kinds of stunt work I've done. I don't think I've ever experienced the kind of pain... that my daughter Eurlyne has. She's going through a lot. When did this all start? Well, when I was doing a stunt, I got hurt. Falling, doing--you know, just a small little thing. I do high falls all my life... then I just did one little fall and landed right on my neck. - It's been a while now. - Four years. Do you get pain down your arms as well? Oh, still. Oh, yeah. I get pain. This whole hand is so bad now-- especially my shoulder. Into my arm and into my fingers. Call Doctor Anad's office, make arrangements with him... and ask him what time you're supposed to show up. But otherwise, I'll see you on Friday. - OK, great. - Do you have any questions? - No. I feel good. - OK. Good. Thank you very much. I appreciate it. Thanks. I'm nervous about it, but I'm not-- I'm at the point where the pain is so bad now... that the surgery is-- Actually, I'm looking forward to the surgery... because I can't handle the pain anymore. I'm just going to have to kind of be more choosy... about what I do and stuff. I won't be able to do any high falls and all that. He told me I should never do it again. But, you know, all doctors are going to say that. When a stunt person goes down... they get generally a goodwill card... signed by the entire crew, and ofttimes, flowers. And they will sign you off the clock before they load you in the ambulance... and they'll be sure and retrieve the costume back--if they can-- before they put you on the stretcher to haul you off the set. Our ability to raise money to take care of our own... is very important to us. The World Stunt Awards is the driving force behind that. Ultimately, we want the show to make money... because when the show makes money... it ends up putting money into this fund. Let me go through the categories that we have. Best Fight is good. Best Fire Stunt. - Yeah. - Yep. Best High Work. I'm just going to throw this one out. It's sort of--I don't know if we're basing this anywhere near... around the Academy Awards. But is there any way that women... should be considered against women for certain things... and men considered against men for certain things? We're not actually allowed-- or don't get as many opportunities as men do-- to do certain stunts. That's an interesting question. - I mean, it's just-- - Best Car Hit by a Chick. - Yeah. - I mean... Women aren't written in to do the bigger stunts... when it comes to vehicles and stuff like that. I know. So what do we do? Give an award for the Best Twelve-Foot-High Fall? No, no, no, no. I'm not saying that. I think the problem is, you would have a bunch of kind of weenie stunts... maybe in categories on the women's side... because you didn't get the opportunities. Scripts aren't written for it. You can't lower the standard of an award show so that-- "OK, well, she didn't really get a chance... "so this kind of mediocre stunt... she should get an award, because she's a girl". No. But again, they have Best Actor and Best Actress. They don't put them in the same category. You know, you both have great points. This is an awards show. This isn't a show... to try to change the politics of Hollywood. And that's--the most difficult part is... the dichotomy of what feels good... from a humanity, philanthropic point of view... and then dealing with this disgusting beast that's called Hollywood. I'm been to about fifteen Xena conventions. She was Xena. And I just think it's the greatest thing that ever happened-- this whole series. I'm really going to miss the show. This show has changed my life in so many ways. The power. The passion. The danger. Her courage will change the world. Zoe Bell! Thank you. I felt myself grow up in a split-second when I had to make the decision... to not take that personally, to be an adult about it... and accept that he's got his reasons... or they've got their reasons for doing it. And it's just one step and a part of life. And you've got connections, and you can go home now... you know what I mean? It's a good thing, but-- Rejection's a big issue in Hollywood... and you have to be able to overcome a lot of rejection. Whether you're working in front of the camera... or behind the camera... people can just erase you. When I was in my late forties and maybe my early fifties... it was really hard, because you'd go through these issues... of "They don't want me anymore. My phone isn't ringing like it used to". I think as you get older... somebody with the experience of Jeannie... and all the films that she's done stunt work for-- she certainly qualifies to be one of the great stunt coordinators. If my name was Gary Epper instead of Jeannie Epper... I probably would be second unit directing... and stunt coordinating jobs all the time. It's just an issue with women. Job 75:6-7 says "Promotion does not come... "from the east or the west or the south... but promotion and lifting up comes from God". God wants to promote you. He wants to lift you up. Promotion does not happen quickly in your life. It's a journey that you take. I want to be healthy-- physically, emotionally. You remember when we first started meeting together? You were so far back in confidence and self-worth... than you are today. I would really like to be the coordinator that I think I could be... but until God opens that door, or I get the chance... I ended up with a couple of gals on a show that-- I was just as green as a gourd, and I guess I still am. And Jeannie kind of looked out for me. And you've been a credit to this business... and a class act ever since I've known you. And you've had a good time. Seems like a lot of people have forgotten how to have that. All right. Three or four go that way, three or four go this way-- a couple of police cars chasing them off. I'm actually going to be on "The Fast and the Furious ll"... for eight weeks. So, I'm totally thrilled. I guess my hustling paid off. - Thank you very much. - You're welcome. Thanks. I probably haven't had this long a run on a job... since I was--probably twenty years. Most of the work on this movie has been car chases-- sliding the cars, doing 180s. There were days when we were doing ninety-plus. You know, I'd love to stunt coordinate... but, you know, it's becoming such a battle... and such an issue as I get older. Sometimes I watch the stunt coordinators, like... I don't think I'd ever be given a big show like this. I mean, I don't know. But if it comes my way, I'll take it. We need Jeannie Epper here. Can we get Jeannie Epper? I want to go out and really present myself out... as a stunt coordinator again. I got the rickety-est car here. I want to give back what I have inside of me.
