[] Oh, hey, wait, wait, wait. I'll help. Okay. Thank you. Yeah. Okay. Oh. Remember when we had a stock team to help with carry-outs? Ah. Yeah, it's not so bad. You know, he got rid of someone else last night. -Who? -Peter. -Seriously? -Yeah. [scoffs] He was so friendly. Sure he was nice, but Bob couldn't afford him. Now I'm desperately trying to find ways to make myself indispensable. You know what I spent all night doing last night? -Hm? -Brushing up on art deco styles. Oh, well, just like the old days. [chuckles] Cramming for art history midterms. Oh. What's happening to me? I feel like I'm moving in the wrong direction. No, it's just temporary. Yeah, but what happens when we get laid off from our throwaway jobs that we had to take because we got laid off from our real jobs? We're not gonna get laid off. Oh, uh, there he is. There's Bob. -Oh, hey, Bob. -Hey. Hi, uh... Linda, Carrie. How have your afternoon sales been? -Can't complain. -Well... Uh, listen. Inventory. I wanna get one more count in-- Uh-uh, hold on, Bob, let me stop you. We, we're gonna go on a trip out of town, um, all weekend, so... Well, I actually was talking about today. Uh, we close in four hours, though. [scoffs] Times are tight. Just handle it. How are... [sighs] [] Linda. Eric. You can't just show up here. I left you six voicemails. Uh, you think that's normal? I don't care about normal. I care about money. Did you think I wouldn't notice that you raised the price of the house? It's way over market now. I'm trying to get a good return. If it takes a little longer, then-- Well, I'm through waiting. Drop the price of the house. Okay? I'm not gonna ask you again. Yeah, I'm sure you will. You drop the price. Welcome to Bayside Antiques, Mr. Marshall. Carrie, get out of my face. I'm not here to shop. In that case, I'm gonna have to ask you to leave. You see, we have a strict no loitering policy. Um, I can get a manager to come and talk to you about it. Drop the price. The worst part is, he's right. I am kind of blocking the sale of the house. Well, it's a beautiful home, but it's a beautiful home that you're clinging on to because it's the one thing in your life you have control over right now. -Ow! Thank you, Doctor. -[chuckles] Do you really wanna live in the house that you and your ex-husband bought together? [scoffs] No. But it's all I have right now. Well, here's a wild idea. You sell the house, take half of the money, move to the West Coast like you've always wanted to do and make it big. And then you can get me a job. [Linda chuckling] -Uh... yeah. I don't know. -What? I mean, you really think it's gonna be easier to secure interviews out there than it is here? Probably not. But I know what you're capable of. You designed the entire interior of the Hildebrand Building. I did not. That is an oversimplification. Sure, they, they took your design, added gaudy balustrades, and called it something new, but we both know that that was your work. And those sketches on your resume... Heads will turn. Yeah. Well, why am I not turning heads now? You turned one head. [giggling] -I'm sorry? -I don't mean to eavesdrop. I just wanted to say that you turned one head. Ah. Really? Yes, I was at the Hildebrand last week for a business meeting and, uh, it's not the most attractive block in the city, but the interior design of that place is, it's breathtaking. -[chuckles] -And your friend is right. Those balustrades are way too flashy. Looks like you have a fan. Hi. I'm Tony. Carrie. And this is Linda. It's a pleasure to meet you, Linda. So are you, like, a design reviewer or... Reviewer? No, nothing like that. I'm just a fan of all things that are pretty. [giggling] So are you, uh, both designers? Um, well, Linda specializes in interiors and I am a landscape architect. Right now we're both technically, um... in between firms. -Stop. -Anyway, what do you do? Nothing as, uh, interesting as what you two do. I'm a private investigator. Well, where is your fedora and trench coat? [chuckles] I left those in the '40s. Hm. [chuckling] Uh, I think I'm gonna call it a night. No, no, no, no. This was fun. [Tony] I hope you won't ever need my services, but here's my card, just in case. You really are a private investigator. I am. Goodnight, Mr., um, Sarno? -Good night. -Good night. [] Hey. Hey. Are you following me? Get away from me, lady. You were at the bar. So? So you were staring at me at the bar and now here. I don't have any idea what you're talking about. Stay away from me or I'm calling the police. You're full of it, lady. Get over yourself. [] [shower running] [car approaching] [] [bird chirping] [] [panting] [dial pad beeping] Okay, and you're sure that this is the same guy that you saw in the bar and the store? -I'm sure. -And, uh... He-he wasn't driving anything? You couldn't get a license plate number? -No. -Okay. Well, we'll broadcast -his description. -Okay. And we're gonna keep an eye out on the neighborhood tonight. Great. Thank you. Okay. [sighs] Bet you're wishing you'd spent more time with me and the private-eye candy at the bar. -Come on. -[chuckles] Too soon? Well, maybe this is a sign that you really should sell your place and get out of here. No, I mean, if I'm gonna leave, I want it to be because I decided to, not because of Eric or some peeping Tom. I know your type. You want men to look at you. When we do, you scream and yell about it. Your name is Linda Marshall. And your friend's name is Carrie Fields. I know where she lives, too. [Bob] Linda. We're circulating the man's description and we'll increase the police presence around your neighborhood and here. That's all you're gonna do? I called you because I need someone to track this guy down. I assure you, we're doing everything we can. Is this going to take much longer, Detective? [Linda] Bob, this is serious. [scoffs] Have you-- Have you talked to the bartender or the cashier at the Quick Mart? Spoke with both of them, neither have anything of real value to contribute. But we have the security footage and this we'll review for ID'ing the suspects. So you haven't reviewed it yet? These things take time, Ms. Marshall. If you can be patient... It's hard to be patient, Detective, when I'm expecting this guy to pop up around any corner. I don't feel safe. Look, I can appreciate your position, but, um, we're moving as quickly as we can. We do not have unlimited resources and this is, this is not the only case we're working on. What if I hire a private investigator? Well, they're expensive and frankly don't do much good. In fact, I find that they do more to interfere with our investigation than they actually do to help. Well, Detective, it doesn't seem like there's much to interfere with. You're gonna want to trust me on this. [seagulls squawking] [knocking on door] [Tony] Come in. Hi. Nice office. Thanks. A friend of mine owns the bar. Lets me use it during the day time. Please, have a seat. I've got to be honest. I didn't think I'd be hearing from you. You seemed a bit put off the other night. Uh, yeah. Sorry, it was a, it was a long day. As was today, it seems. Yeah. So over the phone you said you've got a guy that's a stalker, at home, work and the bar. And you've filed a police report? I did. And to be honest, the police warned me about involving someone like you. [scoffs] But it just seems like-- Not much they can do. Yeah. So my question is, is there anything you can do? This is my job. For a fee, of course. Right. Um, how much do you charge? One twenty five an hour, plus mileage and expenses. There's a $2000 deposit. And I'm not exactly making a fortune at Bayside Antiques right now, so I'm... Look, I really hate stalkers. And you don't deserve to have your life terrorized by him. So I'll waive the deposit. Okay. No offense, but, um... if it takes you weeks to catch this guy, then that doesn't really matter. I've been doing this a long time, Ms. Marshall. I work quick. Trust me. And how about we say, um, we'll bump my fee down to 80 an hour? Well, I don't want you doing me any favors. No strings attached. I promise. Let's call it a I'm-sorry-I-hit- on-you-at-the-bar discount. Okay. [clears throat] Great. I'll draw up the paperwork. Great. Well, thank you, Mr. Sarno. Uh, Tony. Thank you. -Have a lovely day. -Yes. You, too. -I'll be in touch. -Thank you. [sighs] [phone line ringing] You know, it's funny how the world works, huh? [Carrie] Okay, so one minute you're shooting him down, and the next you're hiring him? He's doing a job. That's it. I knew deep down you had a soft spot for mysterious men. I'll call you later. [Carrie] Okay. Be careful. Okay. [crickets chirping] [classical music playing over speakers] [engine revving] [] [groans] [grunting] "Carl Ruston," huh? You're not so tough, are you now, Carl? What were you planning on doing with that crowbar, huh? You're gonna break in? Good boy. [grunting] [panting] [knocking on door] What, what are you doing here? Oh, I just took a little tumble in the sand... with your stalker. Does the name Carl Ruston mean -anything to you? -No. I guess it doesn't really matter. But I'm pretty sure you won't be seeing him again. Your knuckles are bleeding. Oh, well, it's nothing. Just a bit of occupational hazard. And so is, is your head. Seriously, it's nothing. It's... Oh... Ah. Hey, why don't you come in? Let me take a look at that. -Are you sure? -Yeah, please. [lock clicks] Here. Come, sit down. I'll bring you a dry t-shirt. Uh, hey, this was my husband's. I think it'll fit. Um, seriously, you, you don't have to. No, please, take it. Look, this Ruston guy, he knows that we have his ID now, so he's no longer anonymous. I doubt he'll risk showing his face around here again. I-I didn't even know him. I mean, why would he pick me as a target? Look, uh, sometimes creeps don't need a reason. So should I take all this to the police? That may not be the best idea. Why? Shouldn't they know who he is? Uh... It could complicate things. Look, what happened tonight, in my line of work, that's normal. If cops found out I roughed him up a bit, that could make some headaches for me. Okay. I won't say a word. Thank you. Well, I have to hand it to you, you do work fast. Yeah. Uh, thanks again for the shirt. Yeah, no problem. -Oh... -Oh, you okay? Yeah. Just a little lightheaded there. Uh, should we take you to a hospital? No, no, I'm fine, uh... I'm... Seriously, I'm, I'm okay. Well, um, I can make you a cup of coffee. You know, that, uh, that sounds nice. Okay. [Linda] I mean, I wasn't gonna say that. [laughing] [doorbell rings] -Um... -Are you expecting someone? No. Um, I'll-I'll be right back. [knocking on door] This isn't a good time, Eric. It's never a good time, Linda. I'm through playing nice with you. You're clearly doing everything you can to block the sale of this house. Look, I can buy your half of the house and pay you a portion every month! No, I need my money now and I'm gonna do whatever it takes, even if it means kicking you out. If you're gonna be that way, I'm filing a motion to nullify the agreement. On what grounds? You can't. Maybe not. But if I try to, all that paperwork takes time. It takes a really long time. You think I'm gonna let you get the best of me? -Ah! -Whoa. -It's not nice to grab. -Who the hell are you? That's none of your business. Is that my shirt? Is this what you've been busy doing? Huh? Are you living here? This is why you don't wanna sell the house? Now I see what's going on. You're sleeping with my wife in my bed-- Ex-wife, if I've got my facts straight. I'm pretty sure she can spend time with whomever she pleases. You got it wrong, buddy. Not in my house. As long as I own this place, I say who lives here. So get out. You're gonna make me? Eric, stop. Just don't. [scoffs] [groaning] -Are you all r-- -Don't touch me! You're gonna stand there, let your boyfriend assault me? I'm-I'm sorry, I didn't know he was gonna... You might wanna get that looked at. I heard it pop. It could be broken. This isn't over. [sighs] -He's a nice guy. -[exhales sharply] Yeah. You-you didn't have to hit him in the face. I'm not making things easier for you, am I? -[door closes] -No. Look, I-I appreciate you trying to help, but, um, I'm gonna get to sleep. Yeah. Of course. You'll send me a bill? I'll, uh, send you a bill first thing in the morning. You think I could grab my shirt? Maybe I can get it resewn. Yeah, I'll, I'll get it for you. Linda, thank you. You're welcome. Just... Again... I'm sorry. [Carrie] I don't see what the problem is. To me, it sounds like you took care of two things. You should've seen it, though. He had this, like, intensity in his eyes that... [sighs] And the way he hit Eric... Okay, so he's a little dangerous. You could use a little danger in your life, especially if it comes with a six pack. -Carrie... -Okay, fine. At least you know he's around if you pick up another stalker. He's not around. He did a job, and that's the end of it. I mean, I doubt I'll ever even see him again. [Carrie] Um, I wouldn't be too sure about that. Hi. Good afternoon. How can we help you? Yes, I was hoping I could pick up a few things for my place. Um, maybe a lamp to brighten things up a little bit. Well, you are in luck because Linda here is our lamp expert. I'm sure you'll get a lot of great suggestions from her. So, um, I'll be back. -Okay, thanks. -Thank you. -Hi. -Hi. Um, how did you know where I worked? Well, I followed you. -What? -You told me... at my office. You didn't really come here for a lamp, did you? Uh, no, I didn't. I... Actually, I came to apologize. For what? Thinking about it, it seems like this situation you're having with your house is a bit precarious. And what happened last night seems like I may have made your life a little bit more difficult. Well, he had it coming. Still, um, I feel like I owe you. Any chance you'll let me take you to dinner? Are you normally in the habit of asking your clients out for dinner? Most of my clients are middle-aged lawyers. -They're not really my type. -Oh. Technically, you're a former client. I sent you a bill this morning. So what do you say? Are you gonna tell me more stories about how much you love my designs that you've never seen? I think I learned my lesson on that one. Then dinner sounds great. Perfect. So I'll call you. -Sure. -Right. Have a good day, Linda. You, too. [sighs] [] [cell phone vibrating] Hello? Hey. It's Tony. Oh. Well, you don't waste any time, do you? Uh, life's too short to wait. I like that. I made us reservations tonight. Well, you're very sure of yourself. How do you know I'm available? Are you? Depends. Where are you taking me? It's, um, a very exclusive place. I'm sure you'll like it. So I should dress formal? No, no. Strictly casual. Mysterious. Pick you up at 7:00? I'll be ready. Perfect. I'll see you then. [] [clears throat] [knocking on door] Wow. [chuckles] Thank you. -You're ready to go? -Yes. Come on. Table's waiting. [Linda chuckles] Well, um, where are we going? You'll see. I know a shortcut. Well, last I checked, there are no restaurants around here, so... It's new. Ah, okay. Good, we made it before it got too busy. [both chuckling] I hope this place is as good as I hear. Me, too. -I can't believe the scenery. -[Linda] I know. It's not bad. -Let me help you. -[Linda] Sure. Heh. Mm. Thank you. -Can I pour you some wine? -Please. [chuckles] So... antiquities. Heh. Yeah. Yeah. -How'd you get into that? -Well-- -Cheers. -Cheers. It's temporary, it's like a part-time thing, sort of a transition-style job. I used to work at a big designing firm with Carrie, uh, which was great. But the higher-ups started to take credit for all of the work the junior designers were doing, so Carrie and I said something. And then they decided they had to downsize. So we were let go. I can hear where your passion is. Sounds like you really love it. Yeah, I do. I really do. I mean, ever since I was a kid, I used to pore over interior-design books, you know, while my friends were obsessing over the latest teen novel. [chuckling] It's just not my style. And then I met Carrie in college and we made such a great team that we kind of stuck together, so... But lately, things have been a little rough. Be patient, it's only a matter of time before someone recognizes your talent. I mean, I did. -Oh, God! -[laughing] What about you? Do you love what you do? Investigating cheaters and chasing the occasional stalker? It's hard to love something like that. But it's a living. I'm good at it. I'm putting my training to use, so... What did you do in the army? I can't really talk about it. It's... It's classified. Oh. -Really? -No. Ah, stop doing that. [both laughing] I was a combat medic. I knew about all the carnage that was going on over there. Thought maybe I can go out, give a helping hand. So you're good at healing people, then? Yeah, something like that. Just, um... not so good at keeping yourself out of harm's way. Sometimes there's people worth putting yourself in harm's way for. [] [inhales sharply] Tony, wait, I... What? It's just been a little while for me, so... I'll be gentle. [] [] So I woke up this morning and I found this and the glass. You noticed anything missing? No, this is not a robbery. Somebody's trying to s-send me a message. -You have some enemies lately? -Enemies? No. [scoffs] I mean... No, I don't... Who is it? Uh... Uh, my ex-wife. Her new boyfriend. He doesn't seem to care for me too much. Uh... -He gave you that? -Yeah. Um, anyway, do you think he could've done this? -What's his name? -I don't know. Um, her name's Linda Marshall. I guess I can give you her address if you need it. Why not? I'll look into it. Thank you. -[door handle bell jingles] -Ooh, somebody's chipper this morning. -Mm... -Okay, so the date went well? Uh, it was fine. Okay, wait, wait, wait. I-- I need details. [Bob] Carrie, I need your help here. Right now, please. -Okay, okay. -It's all right. I-- I'll be back. Organize your thoughts in the meantime. I want a thorough and expansive, complete narrative retelling of everything that happened, okay? I'm coming back. -Okay, okay, okay. -Okay? [knocking on door] [Groves] Ms. Marshall. Have you a moment? Yes, Detective. Sure. I won't take long. How are you? Fine. Have you heard anymore from the man that was bothering you? No, not since the other day. Good. Perhaps he got the hint to leave you alone. Yeah. I hope so. So I went by your place this morning. Naturally, you were not there. I knew I'd find you here. But upon leaving, I observed a for-sale sign out front. Is that because of the stalker? No. It's a, um... It's a divorce thing. Oh. Thank you so much for checking up on me, Detective. But I have a lot to do this morning. -So... -Yes, of course. Of course. Just, just, just... one more thing. I got a phone call this morning. It seems there was an incident involving your ex-husband. What kind of incident? -So you haven't heard? -No. Vandalism. At his house. Yeah, someone smashed up a few windows. Oh, that's terrible. I... I'm not sure what this has to do with me. Well, he is of the impression that you know the culprit. Mentioned a boyfriend. [sighs] My God. [sighs] No. Uh, Eric is wrong. About which part? He was also sporting a broken nose. Said it was a separate issue, but just curious. Would you happen to know where or how he got that? Ms. Marshall? Withholding information in a police investigation is a very serious offense. Look, Eric stormed into my house the other night looking for a fight, and my... friend was protecting me. It was self defense. He had absolutely nothing to do with any vandalism. Do you know where he was last night? Yes. He was with me. All night? -That's right. -All right. Well, we're gonna need to speak with him, regardless. So do you mind giving me his name? Tony... Sarno. [clears throat] So you ignored my advice. I needed that creep out of my life and Tony got the job done. And to what extent, may I ask, did he help you with this problem? He didn't give me the details and I didn't bother to ask. All I know is that he made it happen. Look, my personal opinion about private investigators aside, I strongly recommend that you do not get involved with Mr. Sarno. Professionally or otherwise. Why? What do you know about him? I know he's messy. I know he's dangerous. You're just trying to scare me, Detective. I'm trying to warn you. Tony Sarno is bad news. Well, thank you for the advice. I do really need to get back to work. Of course. Well, thank you for your time. Thank you, Detective. Have a good day. [cell phone ringing] Good morning. [Tony] You sleep well? Yeah. Um, hey, I, I just got a visit from the police. What for? Well, apparently, someone vandalized Eric's house. That's terrible. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. Yeah, you didn't have anything to do with that, did you? -No. Of course not. -Yeah, I didn't think so. [Tony] What would make you think that I did? Well, I didn't, but, um, Detective Groves seems to think that you did. I mean, he's... He said that he's had some prior dealings with you. -Tony? -[Tony] Yeah. I'm here. Groves. Yeah, I know him. Well, he doesn't seem to have the highest opinion of you. Well, the cops look down on my line of work, and he's one of 'em. Yeah, well, I know that you don't really like police getting involved in your work, so I just wanted to let you know that I had to give him your name. [Tony] Hey, it's okay. You did the right thing. I'm just here at the office finishing up some work, so... I guess I'll see him when he gets here. Look, don't worry about a thing. All right. Thanks. I'll-I'll-I'll call you later tonight. [Tony] Sounds good. I'll talk to you soon. [Linda] Bye. [seagulls squawking] [Tony] Looks like it's locked. It's a good thing I have the keys. Mr. Sarno... Come on in. So I'm sure you know why I'm here. -Ms. Marshall filled me in. -Hm. Seems like there's some sort of trouble with her... ex-husband. What's your relationship with Ms. Marshall? It started out professional. It's become a little more personal. But how is this relevant to your investigation? We at the police department like to examine a little thing called motive. Perhaps you've heard of it. Well, let me help you out. I did not vandalize Mr. Marshall's home. Yeah, she told me that. She also told me about a little argument you guys had. And you don't look quite as banged up as he does. Luckily for me, he's got a really slow right hook. Yeah, luckily for you, he's not pressing charges. Self-defense. Always have an answer for everything, don't you? Try to. Look, a guy like that, I'm sure he's bound to have collected a lot of enemies. And if you look at all, I'm sure you'd find a handful of 'em. But if you get stuck, I'm always here willing to help. For a fee, of course. You know, how about we... How about we stop with the games, son? See, I know it was you, Sarno. I'm not bothered by a few broken windows, but I'm getting a very distinct sense of deja vu here. Now, you continue on this path, and I'll have you behind bars faster than you can blink. And there'll be no technicalities... to get in my way this time. I appreciate the heads-up, Detective. But if you're not here to charge me with something, there's the door. Oh, one more thing. What happened to Ms. Marshall's stalker? Hm. He must have seen all the boys in blue prowling around. You scared him off. Nice work, Detective. Look, whatever this is-- Where's your boyfriend? [sighs] Tony had nothing to do with your house. The hell he didn't. If you keep harassing me, I'm filing a restraining-- Harassing you? Look at my face. Do you know how embarrassing it is to go into work like this? You brought that on yourself. Okay, be reasonable for a second. You're costing me my career. I lost two major clients yesterday. Tell me you're gonna sell the house. Fine. I'm done with you. What? What does that mean? That means I'm gonna sue you. And when my attorneys are done, you're gonna have nothing-- no money, no house, no nothing. -You can't do that, Eric. -Watch me! -Hey! -Hey, hey, hey. Stop him. Stop him. -[sighs] -Excuse me. Linda, didn't you see -what just happened? -No, I don't-- That guy just ran off with one of the antique watches. I'm so sorry. And why was your husband here again? -Another personal issue? -No. I'm-- I'm so sorry, Bob. -It'll never happen again. -Go home, Linda. At this point, you're just costing me money. Bob, are you firing me? You can clean out your things. Bob, I... [sighs] Oh, my God. Hey. Let me help you with that. Uh, what are you doing here? Knew you were having a busy day. I thought I'd come and surprise you. Well, I appreciate that, but, um, it's not really a good time. Are you sure? I came all this way. I appreciate that, I just, um, I need to be alone. I need some time to think. Is there anything I can do to help? No, I-- I just, I need to do this on my own. Thank you, though. [Tony sighs] [car engine starts] [] Tony? What are you... Why are you here? Ow! Ow! Stop! Does this make you angry? -What? -Are you angry? Yes! Please get off me. Please. Please, please. Fight. -Get off me. -Fight back! Get off me now! Please stop. [Tony] Do you not fight back because you're too weak? Get off me! [breathing heavily] -Make me. -What? Tony, please get off me. [Tony] Fight back! Fight me! Stop this now. Get off me. Make me! Make me! [breathing heavily] -Make me! -Get off me! Get off me! [Tony] Good for you. Good for you. Now, doesn't that feel better? To fight back? Linda, you're a stronger woman than you know. You think the world is pushing against you. And you know what? Maybe it is. But it hurts me to watch you not push back. You can take control of your life again. What, are you out of your mind? Maybe. Little bit. I'm sorry. I am. I didn't hurt you, did I? Good. I just wanna help you find your strength. Maybe this wasn't the best approach, but... I'm sorry. I'm gonna go. [Linda] Wait. Where are you going? I don't know. I... [] Going somewhere? Well, look at you. [chuckles] Gonna have to meet with a client on the other side of town. How are you feeling? -Okay. -Yeah? Thank you for being here. And I don't just mean today. You're a really good person. Well, I'm happy you think so. -Can I ask you something? -Anything. Why does Groves have a problem with you? I mean, it's not just your profession. You two clearly have a history. Yeah. Our paths have definitely crossed. Well, what happened? There's not really much to tell. Well, I'd like to hear it. A woman hired me to find proof of her husband's infidelity. [sighs] That woman's name was Julie Beckett. I did my job. She was about to file for divorce and then her husband killed her. Then he skipped town. Groves headed up that investigation. Well, why does he think that you're some kind of threat? [scoffs] 'Cause he's bad at his job. How so? While I was keeping tabs on Julie's husband, I discovered that he was also abusing her. So I confronted him, tried to intimidate him. He responded by shooting her and then skipping town. Groves was on his trail for weeks. But when he hit a dead-end, he was convinced that I put him in the ground. And then he started following some crazy tip about a body being buried at the old canning factory. You know, the one at the edge of town? Groves tore that place top to bottom for days. His lieutenant finally had to pull him off the case, but Groves... he just couldn't let it go. And the husband never turned up? No. Hey, you can't blame yourself for what happened. Well, it's hard not to blame myself. I meddled and Julie got killed. All right, look, I'm gonna get out of here. -Okay. -I'll call you later? [Linda] Mm-hmm. -You're beautiful. -[laughs] Stop. -Look at that smile. -Oh, stop it. -You're beautiful. -Thank you. Just the trick. [door closes] -[car alarm beeps] -[explosion] -Hey. -Hey. How are you? I'm better than yesterday. [Carrie] You know the good thing about all this? Now you really have nothing to tie you down here. Not that the antique store was really holding you back. Yeah, I guess so. -Unless... -Unless? Unless there's a certain private eye who sunk his teeth into you. [doorbell rings] Uh, well, hold that thought. Wait. What do you mean, "An attempt on his life?" I mean, he went out to his driveway last night and his car exploded. Jesus! Thankfully, he was using a remote starter. Well, uh, where is he? Is he-- Is he hurt? Shaken up a bit. Aside from that, he's fine. Ms. Marshall, I need you to tell me where Tony Sarno is. Are you accusing him of this, too? You really don't know anything about him, do you? I know he was a combat medic. -That's what he told you? -Is that not true? I still have his service record on file. Sure, he started off training to be a combat medic. But then he went for his Airborne qualification, ended up passing the Special Forces selection course. Spent the remainder of his career with a counter-terrorism group. Do you know what his role was? EOD team leader. And what's EOD? Explosive ordinance disposal. And those guys, they know a thing or two about car bombs. So is that why you blame him for the Julie Beckett incident? [laughs] So he told you the Tony Sarno version, did he? -You wanna know the real one? -What do you mean? I mean, it didn't happen the way he likes to tell it. Sarno was sleeping with that woman. See, Mr. Beckett had hired him to investigate his wife. Sarno got too close. Beckett found out and attacked his wife and Sarno went for blood. Hm. Yeah, Sarno went to take Beckett out and the wife got caught in the crossfire. That's, uh... not what he told me. And I'm guessing he didn't tell you about the little girl, either, did he? Yeah. Poor little thing probably saw the whole thing go down and ran off scared and alone. We found her a week later. She was struck by a truck on the highway. Yeah, so that girl died because of Sarno. And then he staged the whole thing perfectly. Made it look like the husband went on a rampage and murdered his wife. We never did find the husband. My guess is that he's rotting away in a ditch somewhere. Can you prove any of this? If I could, Sarno would already be in the middle of a life sentence. I don't understand... [scoffs] I get it. I really do. He's charmin', he's protective... but he doesn't know where the limits are, and the law means nothing to him. And now... Now he's got his sight set on you. He sees your ex-husband as a threat, Ms. Marshall, and he's not gonna stop until Eric is out of the picture. I've seen this happen before. I'm not gonna let it happen again. So if you know where he is... now would be a good time to tell me. I don't-- I don't know. I really don't. All right. If he contacts you, would you please let me know? -Immediately. -Yes. Thank you both. Thank you. [cell phone ringing] It's him again. You know, there is still a chance that the detective was wrong about all this. Come on. You don't believe that. [sighs] Neither do I. I just... I don't understand how I didn't see any of this. I mean, how could I be so stupid? Hey, stop beating yourself up. Okay? It's not your fault. I didn't see it, either. Yeah, well, you weren't sleeping with him. [Carrie on staticky microphone] You know, in a really, really sick and twisted way, he was trying to be your guardian angel. Ugh, that is not helpful. Okay, but it's true. And, hey, at least you know he's not gonna hurt you. How? How do I know that? I mean, he could be a psychopath. There's only one thing to do. You have to break it off. I-I mean, if he's that unstable, then what if he tries something when I break it off? [sighs] Okay. Here's what you do. You break up by phone, not face to face. And then you hide out for a few weeks... [Carrie] ...sell this place and get out of here for good. Okay. Okay. You're right. Yes. I am right. Of course, I'm right. When am I not right? Okay, except for the time I told you to date the crazy private investigator. -Okay. -[Linda chuckles] [Linda] Well, what about you, then? [Carrie] What about me? I mean, would you come with me? Oh. I never... I never considered it. Consider it now. I mean, what's holding you back? Nothing. Nothing's holding me back. Heh. Okay. I think we just decided to move together. [laughter] Yeah. I think we did. [Carrie laughing] [Carrie] Here. To new beginnings. New beginnings. [gun cocking] You think we should take both cars or, um... Mm. I actually wanted to sell my car. -That's true. That's actually a really good idea. -Yeah. We should find a place to stay before we start going out there. [knocking on door] Linda. -[Tony] Are you there? -Don't answer. Linda, come on. I know that you're here. I mean, the lights are on. He knows we're here. Will you tell me what's going on? -I'll call the police. -Okay. Do it from the kitchen so he doesn't see... [sighs] Will you please open the door? No. What's happening? I think we need to spend some time apart. What? Where is this coming from? Just yesterday we had an amazing day. Why-- Okay, stop the charade, all right? What charade? Eric's car exploded last night. Linda, I'm telling you, I have absolutely no idea... Um-- Why would somebody blow up his car? Okay, stop lying to me. Just like you lied to me about Julie Beckett. Did Groves tell you that? Well, it's true, isn't it? I mean, you got her killed. I did not. But, yes, I did lie to you. It didn't happen exactly the way that I say it did. But how could I tell you the truth? If you found out... that I had an affair with her, I was afraid that you would push me away just like you are right now. But I didn't kill anyone. Julie's husband came after me with a gun... and Julie stepped in the way. She died in my arms as he ran away. And I haven't seen him again since. And that is the truth. How can I believe anything that you tell me? You really think that I tried to kill your ex-husband? Yeah. Well, you have explosives experience. Just another lie. I didn't lie about that. I just left that part out. You really wanna hear about everything that I did in the army? Anybody can learn to blow a gas tank online. Stop! I'm sorry, I just-- I can't trust you anymore. Hey, they're on their way. [siren blaring in distance] You called the police? On me? You're makin' a mistake, Linda. [police siren blaring] [engine starts] [Linda] Thank you, Officer. Bye. -Hey. -Hey. [Linda sighs] Thank you so much for staying the night again. -Um, it really means a lot. -Yeah, it's what I'm here for. Hey, we're gonna figure this out, okay? Come here. Don't cry. It's gonna be okay. [Linda] Thanks. -I love you. -[laughs] Okay. -Good night. -Good night. [sighs] [sobbing] [exhales sharply] [sniffles] [] Carrie? [Carrie on voicemail] Hey, it's me. Wanted to let you sleep in. I'm off to the shop to tell Bob that I am quitting. Maybe I can scrounge up some empty boxes from the storage room. If not, I'll pick some up on my way back and help you start packing. So get that listing fixed, okay? Let's sell that sucker. I'll see you soon. Okay? Bye. [] [keys jingling] -[floorboard creaking] -[gasping] [groaning] Hm... [Carrie on voicemail] Hi, it's Carrie. Leave a message. Hey, uh, it's me. I thought you were coming straight back here. I made lunch. Call me. [doorbell rings] Carrie? [knocking on door] -[Linda] Carrie? -[knocking continues] [Carrie on voicemail] Hi, it's Carrie. Leave a message. Hey, it's me again for, like, the fifth time. Where are you? The sun's going down, you were supposed to be back hours ago. I'm really starting to worry. Look, if you get this, can you just call me, please? Please. [gasps] [Carrie on voicemail] Hi, it's Carrie. Leave a message. -[phone beeps] -Carrie, it's me again. [sighs] I don't know what to do, except to keep calling you. So if you get these, I-I mean, please give me a call back. [sighs] I can't believe I can't get a hold of you. Tony? No. Linda, it's okay. -It's okay. It's me. -No, please, don't. It's me. [gasps] [breathing heavily] [Linda sighs] [] Sure. -Thanks, guys. -[indistinct radio chatter] We did a full sweep of the entire house. Didn't find any other listening devices. Okay. Do you know how long that thing was in my house? Hard to say. But it's over now. All right? And we've doubled down on our search. -We will find him. -[exhales sharply] But until we do, I can have officers posted outside day and night if you'd like. Yes. Please. Okay. Have you had any other contact with Sarno since he last showed up at your front door? No. You did the right thing, you know, calling us. I know it's a scary situation, but we're here to help you through it. Thank you. Um, Detective, my friend Carrie, I-I haven't been able to get a hold of her. I mean, I-I've left her a ton of voicemails. I've-- I went to her apartment to find her, but I just found some cardboard boxes that I think were hers. -When did you last see her? -Um, two nights ago. She spent the night here. She left the next morning, said she was gonna quit her job. But she never came back. Now, why was she gonna quit her job? With everything that's happening here, we decided we were gonna leave town together. [] And this plan that you had to... Did you discuss it here, in the house? Oh, my God. Oh, my God, he heard us. Oh, my God, he's gonna kill her. -He's, he-- -No, no, wait a minute. We don't know that. We don't know anything yet. I will look into it, I promise you that. In fact, the minute I leave here, I will head down to the antique store and see if anyone saw her come or go. -Thank you. -But in the meanwhile... As a precaution, it might be best to get you to a safer location. -All right? -Okay. Would you be okay with that? Yeah. I'm gonna go outside and coordinate with the other officers, all right? Pack some things, whatever you think you might need. -I'll be right back. -Okay, thank you. [] [cell phone ringing] -Carrie? -Linda... [whimpering] Oh, my God. Where the hell are you? [Carrie] Linda... Oh, my God! Are you okay? No, uh, I'm not. -[hand striking] -[Carrie screams] Carrie? [Carrie] He doesn't want to hurt you. He just wants to speak to you. He wants you to meet him here. W-w-where? Where? At the old canning factory. [shudders] He said you would know what that meant. Uh, yeah. I do, I do. You have one hour. If you don't make it in time or if you bring the police, he's gonna k-kill me. He wants you to say that you understand. Yes, I understand. I'll be right there, okay? -[hand striking] -[Carrie screams] -Ca-- -[call disconnects] [sighs] So we're all set. You okay? Oh, y-yeah, you-you just, uh, startled me. All right, I'm off to the antique store. As soon as I learn something, I'll let you know. The officers outside will take care of you. Ready to go? Um, I-I just need a few more minutes. All right. You sure you're all right? Yes. Yeah, I'm fine. Thank you. Okay. [] [] [tires screeching] Carrie? [sighs] Carrie? [] Carrie... [shuddering] I-I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. You have nothing to be sorry for, okay? I'm gonna get you out of here, okay? Are you hurt? -Just-just scared. -Okay. [] [Linda grunting] [groaning] God! [Tony groaning] Linda, please... -Linda! -[Linda groans] -[taser crackling] -[Carrie] No! [Carrie] No! [] [thudding] [breathing heavily] Eric? What the hell are you doing? You want to tell her or should I? Huh, Tony? -Hm? -[Tony gasps] Hm? Speak. It wasn't me, Linda. It was never me. It was him. What? I-I-I, I don't understand. A month ago, Eric's company hired me to look into an, an embezzling problem. Somebody had been siphoning off a lot of money from their accounts. And he was their prime suspect. Then he caught wind that I was on his tail. After the explosion, I finally figured out his plan. He was gathering all the information he could so he could frame me for murder. With me out of the picture, nobody could deliver the proof to the company. And the only way for him to get the money back on the books was for you to sell the house. You hired Carl Ruston to scare her off, didn't you? Some people would do anything for a buck. So at the bar, that wasn't a coincidence? No. I was gathering information on him. I needed to see if you knew anything, so I could use it against him. [sighs] And that's why I bugged your house. And I just... I just didn't-- He didn't expect to be so taken with you. Right? First Julie Beckett, now Linda? You got a real problem, don't you? I didn't expect you to go into hiding so quickly, though. That was pretty slick. But then I knew I had to make it look like more than attempted murder. I knew you'd follow Linda wherever she went because you're a little psycho. So we return to the scene of the crime. Nothing ever happened here. Yeah. It makes for a good story. -You know, Carrie... -[gun cocking] -I never really liked you. -No, no, please don't... No, no, no, stop. Please, please! Eric, please stop! You cannot do this. I will tell the truth. I will tell the police everything. -I swear. -Then I'll have to kill you, too. I loved you, but you're leaving me no choice. You're just gonna kill us all? For money? It's not just for money, stupid. If my company finds out what I did, I'm gonna go to jail. I can't let that happen. -Goodbye, Carrie. -[Carrie whimpering] [Eric screams] -[gunshots] -No! [grunting] -[gunshots] -[grunting] [gunshots] [] -Are you okay? -Yeah. -Yeah. -[Tony grunts] It's gonna be okay. We're gonna get out of here, okay? Okay. Can you walk? [grunts] I'm okay. [breathing heavily] -[gunshots] -[distant groaning] No, no, Linda. No, no, no. Linda... I'll be right back, okay? Stay there. [distant grunting] [] [breathing heavily] I told you, I know how to win. [breathing heavily] [clattering] Linda! [Eric] I can hear you. You're gonna have to come out if you wanna save your friend. [breathing heavily] You know, Linda, I finally realized why I stopped loving you. It's 'cause you don't know how to fight for anything. Things start to fall apart and you just stand there... like you're gonna stand there while I pull this trigger. [] [gun cocks] Wait... [Eric] Silence. You hear that ringing in your ears? What ringing? [Linda panting] That ringing. [breathing heavily] -Thanks. -Yeah. Six out of ten. This isn't gonna work out, is it? You and me? -No, I don't think so. -Damn. Eric was right about one thing. Yeah? What's that? -You are a little nuts. -[Tony chuckles] Yeah. Maybe a little bit. If I can go back and change a few things, I would. Yeah. Well, we all have regrets. But that's what makes us stronger, right? Right. We should get you to a hospital. -Yeah. -[Linda breathing heavily] -Let me help you. -[Tony groaning] I think I'm just gonna wait right here. Linda? Linda. -Oh, Carrie. -[Carrie breathing heavily] -[Carrie gasping] -Hey. [Linda] It's okay. [] [Groves] So... how are you feelin'? Relieved. [ambulance door closes] I was asking more about your physical condition. But that's good to hear. Thank you so much for all of your help during all this. I realize I wasn't the most cooperative when we first met. [Groves] You know, um, looks like I was wrong... this time. [stretcher rattling] Well, I don't think he'll take it personally. Huh. You still have your suspicions about him, don't you? I don't think I'll ever crack the mystery that is Tony Sarno. [Linda] Well, he's probably a little unstable, but... at the end of the day, I think he's not such a bad guy. Maybe. [sighs] Ladies, it was a pleasure. [engine revving] [siren blaring] Stay well. [] [] [Carrie] Hey. Is this everything? Yup. That's everything. -Then it's time. -Yeah, I guess so. Anything you want to say? Good riddance, Somerset Bay. -[Carrie laughs] -Yeah. You know, I just thought of something. Hm? We've never been on a road trip together. So what if we get sick of each other? Well, I mean, it is my car, so if you get too annoying, I can just drop you off on the interstate and you can hitch. -Okay. You would never do that. -Simple solution. [Carrie laughs] [] [man] It's a male in his 50s. Looks like he's been dead for a while. [Groves] Do you have an ID? No, but I found a credit card. Name is, uh, Carl Ruston. Hey, did you ever hear from Tony since he was released from the hospital? No. I-- I called him and left a message, but he never called me back. I think he's trying to keep his distance. It's probably for the best. [] [Carrie] So can we stop for lunch? [Linda] Well, we just got on the road. -[Carrie] Well, I'm starving. -[Linda chuckles] [Linda] Come on, get your hitchhiker's thumb ready. [Carrie] Shut up. [] [] [] [] |
