In Transit (2018)

(gentle instrumental music)
- Welcome to Alice's.
- Thanks.
- Here's our menu.
Can I get you started
with any tea or coffee?
- Yeah, just some coffee
and water, please.
- Okay, great.
- Thanks.
- [Waitress] Okay, we've got your coffee.
And a water.
- Thank you.
- Let me know if I can answer
any questions about the menu
or get you anything.
We are serving everything
at this hour or all night.
- You're the only place
I could find open here.
I mean like, everything
closed at the airport,
and I have to wait for hours.
- I know, well that's
how we get our business.
- Good for you.
Well, actually, I'm gonna
be here for a while,
so do you mind if I just sit here
and I'll order something later.
- Oh, yeah, that's fine.
Let me know if you need anything.
- [Customer] I will.
(gentle instrumental music)
- [Waitress] Welcome to Alice's.
Can I get you started
with some coffee or tea?
- Um, yeah, I'll take some tea.
- We have a nice Lemon Lift.
- I like lemon.
- Great.
- And some water, please.
- Okay, you got it.
- Thank you.
(happy guitar music)
What's wrong, honey?
- Nothing.
(man sighs)
- I can't concentrate.
And I can't read right now.
Last night was just too crazy.
- Yeah, I know.
- It was fun, though.
I love it when we just, like,
let it loose and go crazy
a little bit. (smacks lips)
- (sighs) I mean...
honestly, I feel like it
was just a little too much.
- I was just crazy, my crazy self.
You know that's our dynamic.
I'm the crazy one.
You're the sweet one.
- I don't know,
I just don't know if I want
that to be our thing anymore.
Or forever, you know?
- It's okay, so, I was wild last night.
I'm too wild for you.
Is what you're, what are you saying?
- Which we've talked about before.
You don't know when to stop.
- I don't know when to stop.
I stop now, I'm not
doing anything right now.
- [Woman] Yeah, you
stop after you pass out.
Yes, that's correct.
- I was tired.
I wanted to sleep.
All right, that was a bad joke.
I understand what you're saying.
- You just get too crazy.
- What do you mean?
- It's like you
don't know when to stop.
- What are you talking about?
Last time--
- It's not even fun anymore.
- I was tired, I wanted to sleep.
I'm feeling tired now,
maybe I wanna sleep.
Sure don't wanna talk about this.
Strange how time moves
slower when you're waiting.
(scoffs)
- Yeah.
- Did you get some coffee or tea?
- Um, coffee.
- Good choice.
How is it?
- I wouldn't know.
I actually haven't touched it yet, so.
- Sorry if I sound funny talking.
Why haven't you drink
any of your coffee yet?
- Oh, I don't know.
Happens, I guess.
Did you get some coffee?
- I think I got some tea.
Not sure.
- [Woman] Tea is good.
- You're very friendly.
- (laughs) Are you being sarcastic?
- No, I mean, you're very friendly.
- Thank you.
- Thanks for talking.
I know you don't know me, so.
- True.
- Where are you going?
- I'm going to Brazil.
- Brazil?
- Mm-hmm.
How about yourself?
- I don't know yet.
I had a flight and it got canceled,
so I have another flight.
- Well, originally, you were
going somewhere, though.
- Yeah.
- You're not going there anymore?
- I was planning on going to Mexico.
And now I have to wait to see
if there's gonna be another flight
for me to actually go, so.
- I mean, there's gotta
be one at some point, no?
- At some point.
In the meantime, we just wait.
(woman chuckles)
Slowly.
- I think there'll be a
few flights to Mexico.
It's a popular destination.
- Well, I'm not going to
a popular destination.
- Oh no?
But you're willing to change your mind
about where you're going, if
you don't get that flight, or?
- We'll see what happens, I don't know.
- That's nice.
To be so free.
- Yeah, free.
Are you saying you
don't wanna get married?
'Cause I'm--
- Do you wanna get married?
I don't even know.
I don't know what you want.
- I tell you all the time.
You're the only girl I've
loved so intensely that I,
that I would think about that with.
I've never, ever in my
life thought about that,
and with you, I think it could be real.
I think it could be something, you know?
- I think it could to.
- So, I'll try to be better.
I'll drink less and I'll be less wild.
And I'll be...
More whatever you want me to be.
(laughing)
No, I'm being serious.
I'm gonna, I'll clean up my act.
You know whatever you need.
I'm there, I'm full
throttle, I'm with you.
- I don't want you to stop having fun,
just, you know?
- Just be controlled.
- Yeah.
- You're right, I'll...
I'll drink less and I'll be less crazy.
And I'll be more responsible.
So we're gonna do it, alright?
Is that a deal?
- Yeah.
- Seal it with a kiss?
(woman snickers)
That's a strange word, free.
- Is that?
- Yeah.
Sorry I'm not talking too much, am I?
- Well, I guess--
- We were the only ones here
so I figured I'd just...
- That's, that's fine.
That's fine with me.
I guess it'll be a long night.
- I'm boring you, already.
- No, that's not what I mean.
I mean, you know, we're both waiting, so,
if I just sit here and stare
at my coffee cup all night
that's gonna be really boring.
- Especially if you don't drink any of it.
- Yeah I mean I'm not
a huge coffee drinker.
I'm not even sure why I ordered coffee.
I guess thinking that I'm
gonna have to be up all night,
you know something to keep
my eyes on the suitcase.
You know?
- Speaking of your
suitcase, do you always keep
your handle up all the time like that?
- You have very interesting questions.
I don't think I was paying
a lot of attention to it,
but that's a good point.
There we go.
- Just figured, it looks better that way.
(woman laughs)
I can see your face more clearly.
- Oh, that's true.
Right.
- Anyway, well I hope you
enjoy the rest of your night.
I'm not gonna bother you anymore.
I'm just gonna.
- (laughs) Sit there in silence.
Are you ordering food or?
- I don't know.
I was kind of hungry and but...
I don't think so.
- No, but you don't know how
long you're gonna be here for.
- At least a few hours, six.
What time is it now?
(woman scoffs)
Don't even know, yeah.
Who cares?
- I don't, yeah.
I'm not sure how I'm even,
when this is gonna happen,
where I'm gonna have to
go before I get to Brazil.
It's just um...
- Oh so it's not a direct flight?
- No, that's why, I
mean, rarely I think ever
are there any direct
flights there anymore.
- Are you from, are you Brazilian?
- Yeah, I was born and raised.
- You know what, this is a little weird.
Do you, I mean I don't wanna.
Do you mind if I just sit next to you?
- Um, well I guess
- Feels strange.
- We're talking anyway so, yeah.
- Are you sure?
- Yeah sure, you can just, you know.
- I can, I'll just go bring my stuff over.
- You might wanna keep track
of where you put your stuff.
- Yeah they always tell
you, you gotta keep an eye
on your suitcase, right?
- Keep it close.
- Do you wanna move your?
- Sure.
- I don't.
- My purse.
- What's your name anyway.
- I was just gonna say.
- Yeah we don't even.
- My name's Olga.
- Olga?
- Yes.
- Daniel, Danielle.
Nice to.
- Daniel?
- Daniel.
- So are you from Mexico?
- Yeah, originally Mexican.
- Well great.
Are you, were you just visiting here or?
- I came here to visit a long time ago
and I ended up staying.
It's a long story.
- All of them are.
- [Daniel] All of them are.
- Well that tea is sure taking long.
- Yeah, I just ordered a tea.
I wonder if she.
- Yeah, brewing it.
Nicely. (laughs)
- Hi, you're the tea?
- [Daniel] Yeah that's tea.
- Okay great.
- Yes, thank you.
- Sorry it took so long.
We ran out of clean mugs.
I wanted to make sure you got a clean one.
- Oh thank you, I appreciate it, thanks.
Would you like anything else?
- Oh no, I'm good for now.
- Okay well just call
me back if you need me.
- Thank you very much.
- And you're fine?
- Yeah, I'm great, thank you.
- Great.
- So what tea did you get?
- Lemon.
Lemon Lift?
- [Olga] (chuckles) Nice.
- Hopefully it lifts me up.
- (laughs) Yeah.
- You know the one nice thing
about coming here so late
is, traffic's good.
- Well, I don't know
where you're coming from,
but I hit some traffic.
- Really?
- Yeah.
I seem to have really good
luck with traffic here.
Not.
(both chuckling)
- Someone drop you off?
- No, Uber.
- So you're just flying solo.
Pun intended.
- (laughs) Actually quite
literally flying solo.
Um, that probably doesn't
make any sense to you.
- No, it doesn't.
- Well I kinda fly.
I'm not in like planes
or anything like that
but I--
- Spaceships?
- (laughs) That would
be quite fun I imagine.
But no, you know circus stuff.
Like aerial--
- Acrobatics?
- Yeah, like this, I'm
not like abused by anyone.
This is actually a burn from my stunts.
- That's so awesome.
- Oh thank you.
- You've been doing that
since you were a girl?
- Yeah, well pretty young.
Like it's been almost 20 years now, so...
- So you started when you were like two?
- (laughs) I get that quite a lot.
Yes, sure, I was two.
- [Daniel] So you do that professionally?
- Yeah.
- [Daniel] Really?
- Yeah, it's my passion.
You know I've been working
really hard on that
and just been wanting to come out here
and get a big gig you
know and be in a big show.
(light, playful instrumental music)
- Now it makes sense.
So why are you leaving here
if you wanna make it big?
- Oh I'm, you know something,
it's kinda pulling me back home.
I, I came out here to audition
and I wasn't sure if I
was gonna get anything,
'cause you know it's just
an audition in a million.
- Um hmm, um hmm.
- And it went really well,
it was a great audition.
I had the time of my
life and I got a part.
I got a part in this new
show, a new creation.
It's like everything that
I had been dreaming of
and thought that I would
want in my life, you know?
Hi, mom? Mom?
I just got back from the audition.
I'm still a little nervous.
I just got back
It went great!
It was everything I hoped for and more.
I didn't just nail the audition.
They also told me I was
perfect for this new character.
for the new show they're putting together.
I can go to Montreal in the summer.
I'm shocked. It was so much
better than what I hoped for.
Thanks, mom.
But I...
- But what, and then what?
You got the part so?
- Yeah.
- That's a success story.
Right?
You're a success story.
- Yeah but not everything is,
you know your career, right?
- Oh, yeah.
- It's more than that.
- I understand, I think.
- God, we're getting very personal here.
- Yeah, we are.
But I somehow relate.
I feel what you're, it
resonates, you know?
- Yeah, well it's good I guess.
- [Daniel] Yeah.
- Yeah but...
- Do you have any other
bruises or burns or?
- You know I've got scars
probably everywhere, but,
you know?
- Physical scars
or emotional ones?
- Well, I'm sure we all
have some emotional scars.
- So this is sudden, this
going back to Brazil, its...
- Well I mean--
- Unexpected, right?
- Yes, very much so
because I thought, I mean
I thought I would come here
and I would audition.
And if I didn't get the part
I would just go back home
and you know, and keep
doing what I was doing
and maybe try again later again,
you know when they have another audition.
But, so this was...
This was supposed to be
the best case scenario.
You know to get this role and...
I mean you just don't really foresee
some things that can happen, so yeah.
I had someone back home
who really encouraged me
to come here and when I called
to let them know and let my family know
that I had gotten the part,
my mom, she told me that,
you know this person that had
encouraged me to come here,
that he had died.
What happened?
What?
Mom, that's not funny.
What are you saying?
You have to be joking,
mom. It can't be true.
What are you saying? What happened?
Everything was fine. He was coming here.
He said he would come to
see me. What happened?
No.
No, mom. No.
No.
It can't be true.
It can't be true, mom.
He is everything to me.
What's the point of being here now?
Why did I leave? If I hadn't left...
I shouldn't have come
here. I knew I shouldn't.
So I'm not sure.
I'm not sure how I'm
supposed to stay here.
And that's why this is unexpected
and I'm not even sure how can I stay
and how can I go there?
And I just don't know.
I just don't know.
- I'm sorry to hear that.
It was your father that died?
- No,
it was my fiance.
- Oh.
That's tough.
- Yeah.
- So you're gonna go.
Is there a funeral?
- I, I wouldn't make it in time.
You know, but--
- So you're gonna give
up and then you just
go back to Brazil?
- I mean, I'm not sure what I can do.
I'm not sure how can I stay here.
How can I stay here after,
after this happened?
Like I'm not sure what I
can do without him anyways.
And it's, I just don't know, I just,
I just don't know.
- Oh man.
- And...
- I'm sorry to hear that.
- Yeah, so it's not turned out to be
the trip of a lifetime, you know,
or of my dreams so much.
Had to happen when I wasn't there.
Just had to happen that way.
Wow.
I mean let's not get
too morose here, right?
- You know what?
Do you wanna, do you wanna play a game?
- (scoffs) Um...
- Cause I don't want you
to, be sad, you know?
- Well--
- Maybe this'll
get your mind off of things for a second.
It's gonna sound strange, but maybe it's,
maybe it'll cheer you up.
- Sure.
I mean I do have to kill time, don't I?
- Yeah.
- Okay.
- You wanna try it?
- Yeah.
- Let me just show you what it is.
- Okay.
- It's in my bag.
Let me just...
It has like, meaning behind it and,
I figured since you shared with me,
I'm gonna share with you.
So...
Don't look, don't look.
- Okay. (laughs)
- Hold on.
Ta-da!
- Well, shiny it is.
- Shiny it is.
But yeah this is, it doesn't
look like much right now
but you open it up
and we have these little...
Things here.
Hold on.
- [Olga] Okay.
- Okay they're like little tiles
and they have like magnets on them.
We can build stuff.
We can build whatever we want.
Whatever our imagination desires.
You know we can build
a new home to live in
or a spaceship to go very far away
to a different planet.
Or we can make anything we want basically.
I mean it's--
- What is this called?
I've never even seen that before.
- They're magnet tiles.
You never heard that?
- I don't think so.
I mean magnets but--
- Basically, yeah,
magnet tiles, magnet and
tile and they stick together.
You can make ships and little dragons.
(roars playfully)
- Maybe we can build a plane
and fly outta here somewhere.
- Yes please, because I think
the planes are all in the air.
Taking forever.
But, sorry this is silly.
I thought it might be cool.
But I realize it's...
- Oh, I don't mean to be,
I'm not like brushing it off.
I mean I don't know, I don't
know what we can do here.
- Well, we could do anything.
Try, just try it.
Here, make, put it in your hands.
Pull it, yeah.
And look, you put a little thing,
put that square on there.
And here, put this triangle there.
- The same way?
- Yeah, different color,
make it a different color.
- Okay.
I'm sorry.
I'm already making mistakes.
- No, it's not mistakes.
It's just, it's beautiful.
Now let's kinda lift them up, you know?
Lift that side up.
Yeah, that's nice.
And now you'll put something
over here, you know.
Look here, put this,
put that over there.
You just made a shelter.
- [Olga] That's nice.
- Put a roof over our head.
(chuckling)
Sounds cheesy, but...
- Oh well.
It's important.
- Yeah.
In there there's no sadness.
You know?
- That would be nice.
- Inside there it's beautiful.
- And how did you come to
playing with magnet tiles?
- I'm really a six year old
boy in a grown man's body.
- Probably all men, huh?
- Probably.
They belong to somebody, so,
that I, that I love dearly.
And so I, I keep them to
remind me of that person.
That's why your story was,
I don't know very similar,
yet different.
So, I'm talking too much.
- No, come on,
I've just told you what happened to me,
so I mean if you want to open up that's,
I guess that would be fair.
But you don't have to.
- How about we get something to eat maybe.
And we'll, over a meal
I'll tell you anything you wanna know.
- That seems even fairer.
- Yeah?
- Yes.
- [Daniel] On me?
- Sure, thank you.
- Of course, my pleasure.
So did you look at the menu at all or?
- Uh yeah.
- 'Cause I'm starting
to get a little hungry I think.
- Look at that, perfect timing.
We're thinking of ordering something.
- [Waitress] Oh great.
- Yeah, whatever the young lady wants...
- I'll just have a fruit salad.
- Okay, fruit salad.
- Thank you.
- Anything for you sir?
- Good choice.
And I'll take a bagel with cream cheese.
- Fantastic.
A fruit salad, bagel with cream cheese.
- Yeah.
- Okay, I'll be--
- Half a bagel.
- Alright.
- Thank you.
- Half a bagel, huh?
- Yeah I don't want, it's late.
I don't wanna eat too much.
- Yes.
- So, acrobat.
Do you have to like eat healthy
to stay in shape for that?
Is that why you ordered fruit?
- No, I mean yes, but no.
I'm not like that worried about it.
You know you work hard enough.
You just, kind of eat
what makes you feel good.
- Satisfies you?
- [Olga] Yeah, gives you fuel, you know.
- Do you have to train a lot?
- [Olga] Yeah, I mean I started training.
- That's a dumb question.
- Yeah, yes that's dumb.
No, no I get that a lot.
It's yeah, you train
many hours a day, a week.
It takes time to get somewhere
where you feel confident and comfortable
and then you have to be able to perform,
which is a whole other level.
But it's a great workout.
Obviously.
- Sure.
I mean I don't think
I've ever really seen--
- You've never seen?
- I don't think so.
I mean I never went to any
circuses when I was young
and I don't--
- But you've been them before,
like you know any aerial
things, like the circus?
Like modern circus?
- I don't think so.
I mean I was never, I feel
like that's very fancy.
You know I'm not that fancy.
- Well what about traditional circus?
Like in Mexico, yeah.
- Like when I was a kid?
Oh in Mexico, never.
No, I mean, not that I remember.
- Wow.
- I think I need
to see it, I need to
checkout what's happening.
- You should.
- Yeah.
I'm gonna go check it out.
- Yeah, they're, I mean
obviously I'm biased.
I really love it.
- Of course.
- But it's a good form
of entertainment, you know.
- What are the terms?
- Oh what, climbing and dropping.
Climbing down.
- Those are the terms that you use?
- I mean there's just different names
that people use for same things,
you know different countries
people have different terms.
- Of course.
They're speaking different languages.
- Not necessarily.
Like sometimes you speak
English, like in Montreal
or even though you speak French as well,
but in England and America.
- Absolutely, you're right.
I stand corrected.
(both laughing)
You're right.
- Well for instance, there's one thing
that's called, some
people call it helicopter
and some people call it wheel down.
And it's the same thing.
- Interesting.
I just don't know, 'cause I
don't really see these things
very often so it's like--
- You've never seen a clip of aerial
or like Cirque du Soliel?
- Circus Ole maybe, yeah, like
in the internet and stuff.
You don't have any would you?
- I'm sure I could, (laughs) well no.
- Do you really have some?
- I mean I've got
something online I think.
- No way.
I wanna totally, and it's you?
- Yeah.
- Is this from your shows or?
- It's from my act.
- Your training.
- That I've been working on
and it's the act that I
performed when I auditioned.
And...
- Wait a minute, so do you
have like an independent act?
Like just a thing you do by yourself
before you get contracted to a bigger?
- Well yeah 'cause you work
on, I mean for aerial I have,
you can specialize in an apparatus
and you know a discipline
that you enjoy the most.
And for me.
- What's yours?
Trampoline or something?
- No, because aerial is like,
you do not know anything.
No it's the rope, it's aerial rope.
It's called (speaking in
foreign language) in French.
And it's I don't know if
you've ever seen the silks,
but literally it's like a
rope hanging from the ceiling.
- Sure, yeah.
- And you climb it first of all
and there's many ways of climbing
and you wrap it around
your body and you do drops
and you know and you perform.
And it depends, your act can be portraying
or conveying something that you're feeling
it could be a comedic act or it could be
a more dramatic one.
It can be changed for whatever
performance you're doing.
And so I have--
- Sounds way more interesting.
I'd love to see it if you don't mind.
- Alright well I'll show you a little bit.
So there I am hanging.
- [Daniel] Wow, that's, that's you?
- [Olga] Just hanging out.
That's me.
- And you're that high,
that's, how high are you right there?
- I mean usually about,
it can be between 20 feet to 30 feet.
- Is this scary?
Are you scared when you're?
- The higher you go, the
further away you are.
- Man, you're not using your hands.
This is all you're, you're just,
your legs are just--
- The legs and you know,
you wrap it around and different ways.
And just then you keep going.
- That's amazing.
It seems very artistic, in a way.
- Thank you.
Well yeah, I mean you could make it
as artistic I guess--
- I feel like
I can see your emotion.
I know that sounds cheesy but...
- Well no, I mean that's
what I'm going for.
So I'm glad that you
can, you can see that.
(playfully pensive music)
- Wow.
That was incredible.
What is that thing called?
- That first time that
I learned that drop,
it was called a (speaking
in foreign language),
which is half a drop.
(speaking in foreign language).
Yeah, it's called a--
- It's French?
- Yeah, it is.
But I think today it's
already called something else.
So I don't even know what it's called.
- Oh.
- That was fast.
- It's ready, yeah.
- Thank you.
- [Waitress] Here you go.
Everything alright?
Looks like fun.
- Move our shelter.
Yeah, they are fun.
Thank you.
- Get this outta your way.
- Thank you.
Oh you brought a full one.
(laughing)
- A bagel comes with two halves,
but if you can't finish it,
we can give you a box to go.
Sometimes those flights are long, so.
- [Daniel] Sure.
No, thank you.
- You'll have a snack.
- Appreciate it.
- Thank you.
- Do you want anything else?
- No, I'm all good, thanks.
- We're good right now.
- Okay.
- Thank you.
Well, bon appetit.
- Dive in.
- That's more French, right?
- That is very French.
(speaking in foreign language)
- I'm learning.
(speaking in foreign
language), what does that mean?
- To you.
- To you.
Okay, (speaking in foreign language).
- How would you say that?
- In Spanish?
- Yeah.
(speaking in foreign language).
- To you.
But if you say--
- And I will
say it in Portuguese.
- How?
(speaking in foreign language)
That sounds beautiful.
- Thank you.
- Wow.
- Well, enjoy.
(bright music)
- Sure you don't want any of this?
- I'm okay. (laughs)
- What?
Is it weird watching someone
you don't really know eat?
- I don't know, ask a different question.
(Daniel laughs)
That's weird.
- No, I think it's nice.
I don't...
Strange I don't, I really
haven't eaten with many people
in a while.
- Really?
- Yeah so it's a nice change of pace.
- How come?
- Oh I just, I don't know, I just kinda,
it's weird I guess.
I don't, I don't know if I like
people watching me eat, maybe.
- Well that's interesting
that you decided to join me
at a diner. (laughing)
- I know, I think you're right.
- You're feeling dangerous. (laughs)
- No, I just don't feel.
- You wanted to
try something new today.
- With you it feels
different I guess, you know.
It feels very natural, it's weird.
I enjoy it.
- No rush, but here's your check.
I know you guys have planes to catch.
- Oh you know what, here, let
me just take care of this now.
- Are you sure?
You really don't have to.
- Daniel?
- Yes.
- I know you.
I babysit for a daughter,
I babysat for your daughter, Emmy.
(sad music)
Oh, Allison.
- Yeah how are Emmy and Nancy?
- They're doing real good Allison.
Thanks for asking.
- Well tell them I say hello.
And if you need a
sitter, I'm back in town.
It would be a pleasure.
It was so much fun.
- How could I have forgotten about you?
Yeah, I'm so sorry.
Yeah of course, I'll tell them
and I'll make sure.
Is 30 enough?
- [Allison] Uh yeah, that's--
- Keep the change.
- That's really sweet.
- Of course.
- Thank you.
- Yeah.
- Okay, well let me know
if you need anything else.
Enjoy the rest of your meal.
- Of course, yeah.
Absolutely.
Bye.
- Oh that's nice.
- Allison.
Yeah, it's a crazy world, right?
- Oh yeah.
So, you have a daughter.
- Yeah.
Emmy is her name.
Yeah she's beautiful.
- Well that's great.
So, she was the babysitter
for you or for your daughter?
- Yeah I can't believe I didn't, my,
I guess my wife mostly took
care of that stuff, so.
I just sometimes wasn't there to,
you know hire the babysitters
and things like that, so.
I don't know how it slipped my mind.
Allison, yeah.
So, yeah, so I'm married.
And I have a little girl.
That's where these magnet tiles come from.
- Really?
- Yeah, they're actually hers.
- She plays with the magnet tiles.
- Yeah, we used to play with
them together all the time.
Quite frequently, you know.
And she loved 'em.
So I kinda carry them with me to,
you know remind me of her and I, you know?
Our connection together.
- That's sweet.
- Thanks.
Well that's strange.
I never thought that would happen.
- It's always like that
how you meet people
at the most random places.
- Most random places.
And then I just can't
believe it didn't really
click in until now.
You know I've had so much on my mind.
It's a long story, but you know it's just
a lot's happened and so
yeah, it makes a lotta sense.
(gentle music)
(groans)
There you go.
- Bathrooms here
are so gross. (laughs)
- Ugh, I can only imagine.
Oh, I got something for you.
- Ah, thanks.
- This flower.
I thought it'd match your dress.
- It does.
Thank you.
- You're welcome.
- You're so sweet.
- You're sweet.
So I've thought of some names.
- Yeah?
- Yeah.
And my favorite so far is Julia.
- Julia.
- What do you think about that name Julia?
Julia.
- Julia. (laughs)
Not my favorite.
- Okay, fair enough.
I like the honesty.
I like it, but.
- I like names that you can
like make into something cute.
You know, like a longer name.
- Like nicknames?
- Yeah, and then a cute nickname.
- So something long
that you can make short?
- Yeah, yeah.
- Okay.
What about like Stephanie?
Call her Stephy or Steph.
Stephania.
(both laughing)
Okay.
- No.
Like Kimberly.
- Kimberly's cute.
- Kimmie.
- Kimmie, Kim.
Get over here Kimmie.
I like that.
- I don't know.
- No?
Okay.
- I don't know.
- I don't know.
- Emily.
- [Both] Emily.
- Or Emilia.
- Emilia!
That's pretty.
- That's cute.
And we could still call her Emmy.
- That's really cute.
- Emmy.
Good one Boo, good one.
Emmy.
- So you lived here together
with your wife and daughter?
- Yeah, um hmm.
I lived here for a while.
You know we had our whole life here.
And so, but now I'm moving.
You know I'm gonna try to get back to, so.
- Get back to, you haven't
kind of decided yet?
You said you might be
going somewhere else, or?
- Yeah.
I haven't decided yet.
I'm still leaving.
Remember when you said,
that thing about freedom?
Well it's kind of a double edged sword.
You know if you have too much of it
you don't really know where to go to next.
And if you don't have enough of it
then you're kinda
trapped in where you are.
So right now I feel
like I don't really know
which path I'm gonna take.
- So, you feel you have too much freedom
or not enough?
- Right now too much.
There's nothing holding me down.
- It's kinda like you, but
in an inverse situation.
Like I have something pushing me away.
You have something pulling you towards.
- I mean I think it kind of
depends on perspective, right?
Whether you're being
pulled or pushed towards
or away from something.
If you're being pulled towards something
or am I being pushed
away from something else
or vice versa.
- Absolutely.
Some, it's like equal and opposing forces.
Kind of like acrobatics.
(chuckles)
So strange.
- It's a funny image because
it's like a tug of war,
you know like a rope.
The rope is being pulled
from one side or another
and I just, I just feel torn apart.
- Absolutely.
- Do you think it was weird that,
the waitress used to babysit for me?
- In what way?
- I don't know, I don't want you to think
I was like hiding anything.
- Oh, I'm sure you're hiding
a lotta things. (laughs)
- I'm not trying to.
- I know, but we just met.
Like I'm hiding a lotta things.
Not intentionally.
But you just don't meet someone,
a complete open book, right?
- No, it's up to me to turn the pages.
- [Olga] Right.
- I can't believe it,
we're gonna be parents.
We're gonna be responsible for
another living, breathing creature.
- I know, it's kind of terrifying.
Do you ever think about what'll happen
or what we'd do if,
I don't know something
happened to one of us?
- What are you talking about?
Like if I lose my job or something?
- No, like if, I don't know
this sounds so morbid. (laughs)
- What, what?
So you think about what if one of us dies?
- Yes!
I feel you have to think of those things.
- Do we?
- 'Cause we have like
another life to think about.
- I mean you're right, yeah.
I don't know, I'd have to...
You know--
- I would definitely
want you to find someone else.
Find a good mother for her.
- You mean like remarry?
- Yeah.
- No babe, never.
I would never get over losing you.
No, I, I couldn't do it.
I'd just be a single dad
and I'd keep working my
job and I'd find a nanny,
a very sweet, old lady
that helped take care of my child.
- You would find a lady right away.
- No, no way.
- Oh my god, babe, feel!
- Oh my god, that's our baby in there.
- Is that weird?
- Yeah that's, I feel it, I feel it.
That's a strong kick.
Oh my god.
She's real.
Man.
- I love you so much.
- I love you too.
Our little baby.
- So are your wife and child meeting you
wherever you're gonna end up going?
- No.
No, not this time.
It's...
- But I thought you were like
moving permanently somewhere.
- I don't know if it's permanently.
Might be temporary, might be permanently.
Definitely moving.
- Maybe you wanna tell me more about that.
- Yeah I should probably tell you.
You know how you told me
when you called your mom
after you got that big gig,
that you had a surprise,
an unfortunate surprise.
Well I really related to your story,
because I had a similar
thing happen to me.
My wife passed away.
(gentle music)
And...
my daughter,
I gave her to my sister-in-law.
Yeah so, starting fresh.
All over again.
And you know I just feel
really guilty about stuff.
And I just don't wanna
dwell in the past and think
about that stuff too much
because it's very painful.
- Um, well I realize I actually,
well you didn't ask me if
or how my fiance passed.
- How did it happen?
- It was, it was all,
well it was very unexpected, like I said.
And obviously he's very young.
And he was murdered.
It was just some burglar, you know.
- At your home?
Was it at home?
- He was leaving home, just
walking out of his place
and I mean obviously I
don't know all the details
'cause he was actually never.
- You were here.
- Essentially no way to know.
Yeah but.
- He was there.
- Yeah.
So just like that you know.
I guess I'm wondering if
it was something unexpected
or if, if you knew it was happening.
- No she was murdered too.
By accident.
You see we were together, the three of us.
And, I was driving.
We had come from a party and
you know how parties are.
You have fun, you drink a little.
You know you have a little few too many.
And we used to do it all the time.
And this time I...
We got in an accident
and she didn't survive
and my baby girl did.
And...
That's the story.
- How old is your daughter?
- She's two and a half, almost three.
- Does she realize what happened?
- She asks about her
mommy sometimes, you know?
She's like "Where's Mommy?"
And I can't even, I don't
even know what to say to her.
You know I'm just like oh baby,
Mommy's just gone for a little while.
She had to go to sleep.
And what do you say to her?
She's a baby.
So I just couldn't deal with it.
I had to give her to somebody
to hope that they would know.
I was really close to my wife's sister.
And she's a beautiful woman so I just,
I left, I left my baby with her.
I didn't wanna say anything before.
- Well, I understand.
What will they say when
she asks about her daddy?
- I don't know.
They'll probably say he was a coward.
And he wasn't a good dad.
And that he left her.
You know.
(gentle music)
I just left her.
All by herself.
- Well why do you think that's
the best decision to make?
I mean you could still change your mind.
- I don't know what decision to make.
I don't even know what to do.
I couldn't deal with it.
I just had to leave.
I had to leave everything, you know,
and so I just, I let her go.
I let everything go.
I climbed that rope that I
made for myself like a noose.
Instead of hanging
myself I just let it go.
To fall into the abyss.
I'm done.
- But you wanna start anew,
you wanna start fresh.
Somewhere where you've never been before
or somewhere where it feels like home or,
what do you feel like
you're looking for now?
- There's no words.
There's no words, I don't know.
I just wanna disappear.
- Well.
- Thanks for listening.
You know all that's very
heavy and emotional and stuff.
And we just met.
- Well we both have gone
through quite a bit, it seems.
- Yeah, yeah it does seem that way.
- That's why I appreciated
you opening up to me,
I really did.
We all need that human
contact sometimes, you know.
- Yeah sometimes it's easier
opening up to a stranger, right?
- Exactly, exactly right.
- My mother tried to convince me to stay.
She said that there's no
point for me to go back.
Because you know what really stopped me
from coming here in the
first place was Lucas,
you know my fiance.
And he really encouraged
me to come out here.
And he said he would
join me at some point.
I can't believe you're leaving tomorrow.
Time just flew by.
I'm not sure I'm ready.
You are, of course you're ready.
You spent your entire life
getting ready for this.
Everything is going to
work out. Don't worry.
You're going to do just
fine there. I'm sure.
You're going to get the part.
But you're not going to be there.
I'm not going to be
there right away but...
I'll be there later on...
I don't want to make you do something
that was never your dream.
I mean, to go there.
I don't want you to resent me.
Don't think about that now, okay?
Okay?
We will always be together, okay?
We have so many memories here.
I'm going to miss this place.
The beach there will
never be like this one.
It won't be the same without you.
But you and I will always be the same.
And this place will always be the same.
Remember what I did right
after I asked you out?
Let's do it.
Now?
Yes, now! Why not? We
only have today, right?
Come on.
You go first.
Me first? No way.
Take it off!
It's not cold!
I'm a "gringa" already.
Together, okay?
One, two...
Two.
On three.
One...
Two, three.
And my mom said, "Well
you know he's gone now.
"And he would want you to stay."
But it just doesn't feel
right to not go back,
to not, I need to find
a way to say goodbye
and I'm not sure what that will be.
- That's why you're going back.
To find out, right?
- That's what I think.
I mean I don't know, that's
what I think I should do.
But I don't know if
that's what I want to do
or why I think I should do that.
- [Daniel] Yeah.
- I mean I thought he was the one, right?
I thought he was the one.
I still think he's the one.
And but he's not in a way, right?
Because it's over.
It's over and I'm not sure.
I can't really do anything to start again.
I'm not sure what I can do.
And if it's not him, I
mean it's always wrong.
- It doesn't mean that.
It doesn't mean that at all, no.
It just means that life happened
and the circumstances were different
than what you expected
them do be, that's all.
- But what if he was the
one, then what happens now?
Like I have you know,
people say I have my
whole life ahead of me
and he's not gonna be there.
And I can't think of how
I could start this again
with will I have someone else,
will there be someone else,
what else, and if there's someone else,
then who was he?
Who, who was he?
- I promise you it's,
hey, it's gonna be alright, okay?
I promise you.
- But how do we know?
- You just live life, you keep going.
Where you fall and you land on something.
- But is it right?
Is it right for me to go back?
Do you know, how do you
know where you're gonna go?
How are you gonna know?
- I don't think anybody knows.
Nobody knows where they're gonna go.
Even if they have things planned out.
Nobody knows.
You just keep going.
You keep going.
- But I don't know where.
- We'll find out.
Now wipe those tears off your face.
- You know we were gonna be married
and I don't know I just...
I just, I can't seem to, to let it go.
And I know it's not easy
and I guess it's not supposed to be easy,
but I just somehow hoped it
would be a little easier.
And I just, I can't shake it off.
I just don't know what to do.
Like I usually know what to do.
- I mean I think being with your family
is gonna give you great strength.
You know being back with them.
I mean that's what happens with me.
Every time I feel lost I look at photos
of my wife and my girl
and I have them on my phone
and I just kind of go through them.
- But you were going away from your girl.
Don't you want to go back
to her and find that?
You're telling me that
I'm gonna find comfort
in being with my family.
Like why won't you feel and find the same?
- My family's gone.
- But she's your family.
And you are her family.
Like you're the closest
thing she has to family.
- Yeah.
I'll come back.
I'm not leaving forever.
- Okay.
- Just I need to get
myself right, you know?
Do you wanna see my girl?
- I would love to.
- I wanna show this to you.
That's her.
She like pink a lot.
- That is so great.
- As she wore pink often.
And that's her little cute face
and little chubby cheeks.
- That is a great expression.
- That's her in her little stroller
with the shoes, sunflower shoes.
- So cute.
- Yeah.
- She's beautiful.
- Thank you.
I don't even need to look at these photos.
I have 'em memorized.
But she was also very musical.
She got that from me, you know,
I play some music sometimes.
I play piano every now and then.
I actually wrote a song for my wife
and it's about, I'm not like
a professional or anything.
- Well.
- I don't even know
if I'll ever pursue it,
but yeah those things help me, you know?
It's like a therapeutic thing.
And just easing my mind.
And she never even got to hear it.
But, do you,
do you wanna hear it?
- Yeah.
- No one's ever heard it before.
- I would be honored.
- I would love to play it for you.
Do you mind or?
- No, please.
I would love to.
- You think we can go play?
- No one's stopping us.
- (sighs) Well, I wonder
if anybody, I'm gonna.
Oh man.
This is so cool.
Do you think anybody sees us?
- I don't see anyone, so,
I think we're set.
- Let's see if it's on.
How do you?
Let's try this one.
We have power.
(tentative piano music)
(chuckles)
Alright well, nobody's
heard this song before.
It was inspired by Nancy, my late wife.
And my feelings towards her, I guess.
And it's in Spanish, half of it.
And the other half in English.
So.
(melancholy music)
(singing in foreign language)
If you leave me baby
I don't wanna cry
I just wanna hold you
And never say goodbye
I've never played that before.
For anybody.
(happy music)
- I hope she's not horrible
when she's a teenager.
- Oh.
- Girls are the worst.
- Girls are the worst.
- Just kidding.
- Why couldn't we
have a boy?
- I love you.
- No I'm kidding, I'm kidding.
I'm sorry, I love her.
Of course I love that we had a girl.
I mean it's just that she's
definitely a free range kid.
She's gonna be crazy.
- [Nancy] Kids can be crazy.
- [Daniel] Who did she get that from?
- [Nancy] I think we're in trouble.
That's from you.
That's definitely from you.
I'm just kidding.
She definitely likes to
do what she wants to do.
- [Daniel] So independent.
It's ridiculous.
- [Nancy] You've been so good with her.
- [Daniel] Thank you.
I really appreciate that.
I'm trying.
- I've actually been
really, really proud of you.
You haven't been drinking as much lately
and that's been good for us.
- Yeah, I, right.
It's a logical step, you know?
And you've been wonderful.
Obviously I couldn't ask
for a better mom, ever.
Thank you very much for listening to that.
- Thank you so much for
sharing that with me.
It was beautiful.
You need to keep writing and making music.
- Thank you.
Thanks.
I really appreciate it.
You know I was, no one's
ever heard that before.
So it was good to play it.
You know and I don't know,
when I was playing it,
I was thinking about a lotta stuff.
You know I was thinking
about my little Emmy
and my wife and
being here with you in this strange place.
I think a lotta things kinda made sense
after playing that, believe it or not.
So thank you, it was cathartic.
It was amazing.
It's...
I appreciate it.
- It was meant to be heard.
- That's nice of you to say.
You know I have to share
one more thing with you.
I actually was leaving the country
because you know with my wife's accident
with our accident, I was
blamed, rightfully so.
You know I was...
So if I stayed here
I'd have to probably go
to jail, you know?
Vehicular manslaughter
or something like that.
And so...
But after being here and playing that,
I, your words really made sense to me.
You know?
My daughter's only family is me.
So it makes sense that I
just, I think I have to stay.
I think I have to stay here
and whatever happens, will happen,
but at least I'll be with her.
Thank you.
- I think you're making
the right decision.
She'll be so happy to know you're here.
(sighs) It makes me think about,
you know how I have to,
it's funny because you
know how you talk about
running away with the circus
and it's kind of like by
running away with the circus
I'm gonna stop running away from myself.
I feel like I want to avoid
going for the things I really want.
I'm afraid of not living
up to my own expectations.
And I don't wanna say or think
that what happened to him,
I could be using that
as an excuse, you know?
To not go for something.
- [Daniel] Totally.
- So I feel like I have to stay.
Because if I go and
even if I go for one day
that could just be it,
that's my opportunity gone.
So I don't control that.
And I worked so hard and I got it.
For me to just find a
reason to not take it
and to go back, go back to what?
So I'm staying.
- That's amazing.
It's almost like you
know it's meant to be.
- I truly believe that.
- Yeah.
- Thank you.
- No thank you.
- Thank you for joining me at my table.
- Thank you for allowing me to join you.
- It's been fun sharing breakfast?
(both laughing)
With you.
- A late night breakfast.
- Yeah.
- Breakfast is always good.
- I'm just finishing up my shift.
Is there anything else I
can get you before I leave?
- I think we're, I think we're good.
- We're good.
- Real good.
- Great.
- Yeah.
- It was really good
running into you Daniel.
Give Emmy a hug for me.
She's fantastic and please
tell Nancy I say hello.
It'd be lovely to babysit
for you guys again.
- Oh Allison, you know what,
I think I'm gonna have
to take you up on that.
- Yeah?
- Yeah.
- [Allison] Have a great
trip and I'll look forward
to seeing you again soon.
- Thank you.
I mean that.
You have no idea how much this meant.
- My pleasure.
Have a great trip, both of you.
- [Olga] Thank you.
- Thanks.
Guess that means they're changed.
What time is it?
I don't even--
- I don't even know.
(laughs)
- Well, my flight's supposed to start
and leave in 20 minutes, so.
Since I'm not going anymore,
I guess this is it.
- I guess this is it.
- Well you know we're
not gonna be so far away.
Since we're both staying around.
It'd be really nice to, you know?
- You wanna keep in touch?
- Yeah.
- Yeah, me too.
- It would be lovely.
- I guess this is goodbye.
- I guess this is it.
- For now.
- For now.
Well I'll see you again.
- Totally.
Hug you.
(gentle music)
(tense music)
(gentle music)
(happy music)
(thoughtful music)
