My Guardian Angel (2016)
[indistinct whispering]
[whispering stops] What are you doing just standing there, staring? God, she gives me the creeps. Here, make yourself useful. Come on, then. Now go to your room. [sighs] Not until breakfast. Eating snacks ruins your teeth. And I will be inspecting your teeth, just to make sure you're not snacking behind our backs. [indistinct whispers resume and then fade] [distorted, ominous whispering] [Mother] This wine's nice. Are you deaf as well as dumb? Bed. Now. Thought I could sense something. [air rushing] [indistinct whispering] Silence! [moans loudly] - [glass shatters] - [screams] [Mother] What the hell was that?! [panting] [girl yelps] Hannah! What have you been doing?! Look at me! I said what... What have you been doing? What have you been doing? [screams, then whimpers] What have you been doing? Look at me! Look! [continued whimpers and short screams] If you carry on misbehaving, I'll bring Mother up. - [exhales deeply] - Okay? - [quiet whimpers] - Have you calmed down? And you know what she likes to do, don't you? [soft whimpering] So be a good girl. [whimpers loudly, screams] - [child giggles] - [door opens] - [Father] Ah! - [gasps] - You little... - [screams] No! - [Father] Here comes Mother. - [screams] What's the little bitch been up to now? She threw that picture at me. [whimpers] I warned you never to put her photo up again! See? I warned you, Hannah. I warned you. - Right. Come here! - [screams] Now! - [sobs] - [Mother] Shut up! Hold still, Hannah. That's it. That will teach you a lesson, Hannah. [Hannah sobs, muffled] Won't it? [Father] You were warned, Hannah. - You were warned. - [Mother] Exactly. How dare you disobey us. Hands! Got to stick your arm in! Arms at the back. That's it. - [Mother] Huh! - [moans] Darling. Darling, darling. We don't want to leave any marks. [whimpers] Be good, Hannah, or next time I'll tape up your eyes and nose as well. [door closes] [indistinct whispering] [whimpers] Get in there! Get in there! [sobbing] Is that what you think we deserve, Angel? A curse?! Nice idea! I'll keep them as a souvenir! [screaming] No, no, no. Enough. Enough. Enough. Fine, but we'll keep her locked up so she can think about what she tried to do to us. I'll kill you both. Well, she's got more spirit than Hannah. [Mother laughs] She'll never betray us again. Give me the key. I'll lock her up. [Father] Okay. [lock turning] [footsteps retreating] [birds singing] [Mother] Hannah! You better be awake up there! Do you want to be late on your first day? [grunts] [footsteps approaching] [Hannah moans] You're lucky this is the first day of your new school or I'd tie you up again... tighter. [sighing] God's sake, hurry up. Eat faster. [disgusted groan] Go hungry! [Mother] I'll just be through that window, okay? Speaking with your teacher, Miss Palmer. Growing up so fast. This time next year, you'll be in second school already. She must be new. She's sitting with her mummy. [girl] Aww, poor little baby still needs her mummy. - [laughter] - [girl 2] Loner. [Mother] Look, I'm not gonna deny it, but it has been very difficult. No, I can imagine. But we never give up. Well, she's continuing to see her speech therapist. Anything I can do to help her to speak. That's really all we want. She's just too high-functioning for other schools to take her on. Elena sounds perfect. What's her background? Well, she was born in the Czech Republic. Um... she's wonderful with the children. She's very perceptive. Hannah's going to be in good hands. Good. Hi. I'm Katie. Don't have to be so rude, I was only trying to be nice. Yeah. Trying to be nice. What's the matter, cat got your tongue? Weirdo. Katie? You think I didn't see? See what? I was only trying to be nice. It's important I make you aware of something. Not everyone in life sees and feels things exactly the same as others. You see, Hannah has a condition, something called autism. Something you will learn more about when you get older. But for now, you need to treat her exactly the same as you would treat your friends. You called her a weirdo, didn't you? Didn't you? Do you understand? Yes, Miss. Sorry. Now you know why, try to be nicer next time. Otherwise, I will speak to Miss Palmer about your behaviour. Okay? [footsteps approaching] You'll be fine here, sweetie. Had a nice chat, told them all about you. It'll just take you a little time to get used to your new school. Okay? Be careful. You tell, I'll make it so miserable for you, you'll end up like your sister. Now, come on. Time to dazzle your new heads. [footsteps approaching] She had it tough with bullies in her previous school. That's why her parents moved her here. Watch out for her, just in case. I will. So, how high-functioning is Hannah? Um... very, actually. She was diagnosed with non-verbal autism at the age of four, but she hasn't spoken since birth. Wow. Well, I'm so very fascinated with autism. It's, you know, one of the reasons why I love my job. I know that autistic people can be super intelligent. Yeah. Just be aware that her mother brought to my attention - some other issues. - Like what exactly? Well, she doesn't cope very well with loud noises or too many people speaking at once. Her writing needs some work. And, um, she understands well, but she prefers communicating with drawings and expressions. And her social skills can come across as slightly inappropriate. So... it's important to communicate that problem with the other children. [chuckles] I'm sorry. Can I just, uh, correct you there? Could we just refer to condition instead of a problem? Because it is not a problem. [sighs] Well, you know what I mean. Her mother gave me some pet cards. Oh. Hmm. Okay, thanks. Good. Hi, Hannah. This is your new assistant teacher, Elena. Hi. We'll have a lot of fun, I promise. Do you like to draw, Hannah? Good, good. [chuckles] So, for example, "she swims like a fish" is a good simile. You're almost comparing words to other things. - Do you understand? - [children] Yes, miss. Using similes makes it far easier for people to understand what we're saying. As using words of imagery makes it stronger. People use them often. We all do. Probably without even realizing we're doing it. Now what I'd like you to do is take out your notebooks and write down two similes that you might use every day. - And she has a face like a pig. - [chuckles] [Miss Palmer] Katie, pay attention, please. [indistinct whispering] Hey, what's outside? [whispering continue] [whispering stops] Hangman? We can't play a game right now. I'm sorry. Mm. Okay. "S". "F". "A". [indistinct whispering] [Elena] "E". Can I get a clue, please? An angel? You can see an angel outside? [school bell rings] [softly] It's okay. [Elena] You can have them all. [chuckling] [Miss Palmer] So, how was she? I think there is more to Hannah than we've been told. What do you mean? Well... look at this. What on earth is she doing playing Hangman in my class? I know, I know. But I just needed to see what she was trying to say. It was just to get an answer out of her. She drew a little girl hanging. So...? Well, has she had any problems at home? [scoffs] I don't know, Elena. Just focus on the job, please. [footsteps retreating] Now make me a tea! [woman on TV] Your best mate is locked up because of this. Does that mean nothing to you? [man on TV] Until next week... [man 2 on TV] I got caught. [man 3 on TV] You didn't. - [man 4 on TV] I'm a free man! - [woman whooping on TV] [water boiling] [indistinct whispering] [man on TV] We've been waiting patiently for you two to... Ouch! You filled it up too much! - [screams, moans] - Oh, shut up! Go and make me another one before I throw the rest in your face! - [disgusted grunt] - [Hannah whimpering] [groans] [pants] - [ragged breathing] - What's going on here? Make your dad one, while you're at it. Come on then, let's go. Do it properly, come on. [whimpers and gasps] - Time for a check-up. - [panicked breathing] [screams] [Hannah sobs] [Hannah sobs and screams] She's making a lot of noise. And? [Hannah continues to sob and scream] [Mother] There, there. Daddy's going to sort your teeth out. [screaming] - [groans] - Hannah? - [moans] - Open your mouth. [grunting] [Mother] Open your mouth for Daddy. [gasping] - [moaning] - [Mother] Shh! [Hannah screams, then coughs] Mouth out wide again, please. [sobbing] - Good girl, Hannah. - There, there. Good girl, good girl. There we go... [screams] I'm going to make you look beautiful. [drill whirs] [moaning] [Hannah screams] [moans softly] [groans] [grunts] [pants] [alarm sounds] - [neck snaps] - [grunts] [Miss Palmer] So the definition is: "The use of words whose sound imitates an actual noise." So sorry, Miss Palmer. We had to fit Hannah in for an emergency session at the dental surgery. [Miss Palmer] Oh, I hope everything's all right. She's fine. [Miss Palmer] Hannah, come in. Have a seat. Good job her father's a dentist, otherwise we'd be waiting for days. Come on. - You'll have to excuse me. - [Miss Palmer] Yes, of course. - [door closes] - [Miss Palmer] Right. [laughs] Looks like she's been beaten like a pig. - [laughter] - Katie, I heard that! [indistinct whispering] - But... - How dare you! Honestly... [Miss Palmer] I won't tolerate something like that in my class! Sit down! I'll be speaking to your parents. [laughter] [door closes] Right. Examples... [door closes] [Elena] Hannah? - [whimpering] - Hannah? Hannah? Oh... Would you like me to get your mum? - [short screams] - [shushing] Hannah, it's okay. It's okay, Hannah. - It's okay. Okay. - [whimpering subsides] What's wrong, sweetie? What's wrong? Can you... Can you show me? You are so good at drawing. [Hannah continues whimpering softly] Maybe you can draw for me. And you can show me what's upsetting you. Please? Is everything okay at home? [exhales sharply, resumes whimpering] Aw, I have to admit, I don't like dentists either, Hannah. Try to look at me... please? Would you like to go back? You can trust me. [panting] You can trust me. You can trust me. [breathing heavily] Are you ready to go back now? Yes? [Miss Palmer] She's just come back from the dentist, so, of course she's gonna have a tantrum. I don't want her parents to be concerned. But did you see her lip this morning? No, I didn't see anything. Well, dentists shouldn't scratch her lip like that. You know, I just found it strange that her mother just turned up in the morning, without calling us first. Well, she was probably just moving around too much in the dentist's chair or something. I'm sure it's nothing. Look, the Hunts are new parents. We have to be accommodating. Isn't it our job to follow up any concerns? Look, it's just been a few days. We have to wait before we jump to any conclusions. I just want you to be aware of my thoughts. Look, Parents' Evening is coming up. I'll talk to them. If anything stands out, we can iron it out then. - Okay? - Okay. Thanks. [school bell rings] [telephone rings] [clears throat] - Hello, Julie speaking. - Hello, Mrs. Hunt. This is Miss, uh, Palmer from the school. Is it convenient to talk? Yes, absolutely. Great. Sorry to bother you. I just wanted to have a brief chat with you about Hannah. - Is everything okay? - Yes, nothing serious. But, uh, you see, Hannah had a meltdown after you dropped her off. I know she's been to the dentist, and, uh, we also noticed a slight cut on her lip. Please, you should have called me if she was becoming difficult. Oh, no, no. She's a real pleasure. I just wanted to make sure that everything is okay. Well, I appreciate your concern, but everything is fine. Apart from a little tantrum at the dental surgery this morning. It's always difficult with things like that. Hannah wouldn't stop moving. Sadly, one of the tools clipped her lip. Next time, if you could inform us if you're going to be late, that would be greatly appreciated. I do apologise. When you have a screaming child with toothache, one does tend to forget. Oh, don't worry, Mrs. Hunt. Miss Palmer and I will be keeping a close eye on her. Miss Palmer? I thought you were Miss Palmer. Yes, absolutely. Now you have to excuse me, I've got to get dinner ready. Let's review this at Parents' Evening, okay? Okay, great. Thank you. Have a lovely evening. [phone beeps off] [indistinct chatter] [laughing] [laughter grows louder] [pressing heavily on marker] [indistinct whispering] [whispering stops] [whispering resumes] [gasps] [pants] [Father] What's going on? Behave. I'll get Mother. [indistinct chatter] Miss Palmer, lovely to see you again. Oh, you too. Good evening. - Pleasure. - Please, have a seat. - I baked them myself. - Oh, you shouldn't have. Oh, no, I should. We really appreciate everything you're doing. Oh, but this is so lovely. And with your job, cakes. Oh, yes, not the best choice, but my wife does love to bake. And it's always left for me to remind Hannah not to eat too many. - So where's Hannah? - Oh, she's with her grandmother. Where's Elena? She's just with some of the other parents in the other hall. I'll make sure I get her in a minute. Oh, it's no bother at all, honestly. I just really appreciated your call the other day. - My call? - Yeah, about Hannah. Oh, it must've been Elena. She's so conscientious. You didn't know she'd called? Well, I did tell Elena to take special care of Hannah, so she was probably just following that. Right, so... Hannah, such an intelligent girl. Bless her. Anything I could do to help her condition and enable her to speak... Well that's really all I want. We're trying speech and music therapy. I hear it's starting to work for some children. There needs to be more things like that in place. Simply aren't enough options for children like Hannah. Tell me, Miss Palmer, how's Hannah getting along with the other children? Absolutely fine. No one's causing her any problems. Oh, that's lovely to hear. The other school did nothing about the bullying. - So glad that we've moved. - [Father] Mm. How's she getting along with Elena? It's still early days, but, uh... they're definitely communicating in other ways though. Hannah draws a lot. Some rather interesting images, actually. Really? Like what? Like, um... This one. Have you seen this sort of drawing before? - [inhales deeply] - Um... - Is everything all right? - Darling. I think we should tell you. Um... It might explain why Hannah is drawing these images. The thing is, Hannah had a sister. Her name was Angel and she, uh, passed away very recently. Oh, I'm so, so sorry. That explains everything. I feel terrible for showing you this drawing. [Father] It's fine, you... You had no idea. They were so close. They always had some sort of connection. But Angel wasn't autistic. Look, it's our fault for not telling you. Well, we're still coming to terms with it ourselves. Mm. You see, we made these changes for Hannah. New life, new place. More importantly, away from those bullies. It was the main reason that we moved. - May I ask how she... - How did she what? - No, no. Sorry. I didn't mean... - How she died? Is that what you mean? - Look... - Come on, darling. - Let's get going. - Listen... We could do this another time. [stammers] Whenever is convenient. I can come over to your house. It's not normal procedure, but I'm happy to do it. [car engine starts] [car engine starts] Did you see her face? So sad. [chuckles] She battened right up. Told you. Once you bring a death into the equation, especially a child, no one fucks with you. But we still have that Elena to deal with. I'll plant a seed when Miss Palmer comes round. If my instincts are right, she'll be trouble. She thinks she's a match for me? [scoffs] Please. No one's a match for you, my dear. It will do Miss Fancy Pants Palmer good to see what good parents we are in our own home. And then, when she's on board, we'll take down Miss Do-gooder. How dare they think they can parent someone else's child? You all right, love? Yeah, sorry. Just looking for my keys. [whispers to self] Oh, God, what's wrong with you? What are you doing, Elena? - [rips tape off] - [groans] [Mother] Well, it's your own fault. But never mind, Dad'll put a stop to your tooth decay. And stop you from being friends and taking Elena's sweets in future. [Hannah breathing heavily] [whimpers] [screaming] [disgusted groan] [doorbell rings] [softly] Showtime. - Hello. - Miss Palmer. Lovely to see you. Please come in. Thank you. - Please, go through. - [muffled moans] - Please, take a seat. - Thank you. I've made some coffee, but would you prefer tea? Oh, no. Coffee would be lovely. - Thank you. - Help yourself. - There we go. - Lovely. You didn't have to go to so much trouble. Oh no, it's no trouble at all. This cake is my Hannah's favourite. We bake it together sometimes. [Miss Palmer] Oh. So where's Hannah? [Mother] Oh, she's out shopping with her father. Look, Miss Palmer, about the other night, I'm really sorry I overreacted. But you understand, right? Of course, of course. [clears throat] Sorry, I didn't realise that they were twins. Yes, they were. So, how is my little Hannah doing, and what can we do to help her to grow? Oh, well, Hannah's doing very well. Elena started working on her handwriting. Wonderful. I do try to help her with that too. And, well, I read to her a lot. Oh, that's excellent. So how involved is Elena with Hannah's lessons? Well, I lead the class, but Elena sits by her side, and reports to me every day. She's highly trained. Would you like to see her credentials? I trust you completely. - You're the experts. - Thank you. But if you have any concerns, please let me know. Well, actually, there is something that I wanted to flag up. Well, Elena gave her sweets. And I'm not too sure it helps a child like Hannah. You know what I mean? It's not the sugar we mind. But, apart from the dental problems, I thought it was preferable to build up trust without bribes like sweets. Yes, I see what you mean. I'll have a word. Oh, thank you. It's put my mind at rest. Feel free to ring me any time. I will. It's been a pleasure. Thank you so much for the cake. No problem. - Goodbye. - Goodbye. [exhales] Well, I suppose you were quiet enough. But, young lady, if your teachers ever have to come round again, I'll cut your tongue, you disgusting little girl. No dinner tonight. I'm too upset to cook. - Go to sleep. Think of me. - [gasps] [wind rushing] [birds chirping] [indistinct whispering] Please... [gasps] Why did you leave me? I want to be with you. [gasps] I don't want to be here anymore. Hey, over here. - Angel! - [giggles] You can't go yet. They need to pay for what they have done to us. [stammers] I can't. I can't kill. But I can. So let me in. There's only so much I can do from this side. You need to trust me. Let me enter your body and I will finish this. [stammers] But... I'm scared of how it will feel. I can't promise you it won't hurt. But you must let me try, before it's too late. I was scared. But I never should have left you. They should be the ones to die. Not you. I love you. - [Hannah] I can't. - Let me in. [sobbing] Then you'll have to do it the hard way. Try to do what I did again. [Mother] Hannah! I haven't got much time. Look in the cupboard in Mum and Dad's room. - What? - The dolls. [Mother] Hannah? There's a key under your pillow. The magical shop near your school, there's a lady there, she can help you. - [Mother] Hannah, wake up. - Now go! [Mother] What's gotten into you, you sleepy girl? You have five minutes. [indistinct whispering] [whispering continues] Hannah! [sighs] What are you doing in my room? How do you even know about this?! How do you know?! Don't you ever come into our room again and touch our things! - [slap lands heavily] - [Hannah cries out] You do not miss Angel. She doesn't exist in this family anymore. She chose to kill herself. It's just you. Same ugly face though. So it really doesn't make a difference to us anyway. How many times do I have to tell you this? [scoffs] Now get to school. I'm late for work. [Mother] Get out. Hurry up. You're late. [car drives away] [Della] Hello there. It's good to see you again. [indistinct whispering] Do you want to return them? Ah, that's right. They're for a school project, aren't they? Well, come with me. We'll go over everything again, okay? [Della] Ah, here it is. This will explain everything and help you with your project. Now, just to recap. You must make sure that the hair is from the person that you're casting the spell on. You must make sure you use the right coloured pins. So, red for power. Green for money. Blue for love. Black for... And most importantly, you must leave the doll in the place where the person sleeps. That way, over time, it will fill with their energy. Finally, you must believe in this 100 percent. In your heart and in your mind. Anyway, it's all in the book. Good luck with your project. Wait... Before you go... give me your hand. Sit down. [distorted whirring sounds] - [sounds crescendo] - [gasps] [sounds fade] You see and feel the world differently. I know you understand what I'm talking about. Your sister doesn't mean to scare you. But she will only rest when you're at peace. And for that, you must both be free. The only way out... is to let her in. So, um, let's take one minute. Write down a few more sentences, and we can carry on to the next. [children whispering] [Miss Palmer] Did you have a question? Pay attention, please. Very good, Maisie. Hey, what's this? Is everything all right over there? Yes, we're just making notes. Actually, if you could help some of the other children today, Elena. I trust everybody else is taking notes? - [Elena] Sure. - [Miss Palmer] Right. [whispers] Meet me after class in room seven. [Miss Palmer] On to revision of metaphors. [door squeaks loudly] Hi, Hannah. It's okay. I want to help you. Is, uh, that your book? Does the book mean something special to you? I want to be your friend. Will you let me, please? Can I see the book? Oh... What are you planning to do with it? Okay. [panting] It's okay, it's okay. [Miss Palmer] Hannah, is everything all right? - Elena, what's going on? - Hi. We were just, uh... Um... Hannah was about to show me her new book. [Miss Palmer] What sort of book? No, it's okay. It's just, uh... Hell, there's nothing okay about it. [door slams] What were you showing her? Elena, this sort of thing is not suitable. I think I might assign someone else to her. No, please! You don't understand. Look, I think she's really starting to connect with me. Not if this is the result. Elena, I'm very concerned. I had a chat with her mother the other day, and she's very concerned too. She asked me about the phone call that we made. Oh, I've been meaning to speak to you about that. You used my name. Well, not exactly. It was a little misunderstanding. Elena, I'm not stupid. Okay, look, I did speak to Hannah's mother on the phone, but I just had a couple of questions. But, you know, the minute I started speaking, I just... I knew it was a stupid idea. Of course I sound nothing like you. I appreciate your concern about Hannah, but phoning the family without even speaking to me, that's just unacceptable. I'm really sorry if I've put you in a difficult position. Yes! Yes, you have! And I have to say, I'm beginning to share her concern. No more favouritism, and no more sweets. You don't understand, there is... There's what?! - Signs. - Signs of what?! Abuse. I think Hannah is showing signs of psychological and physical abuse. How would you know? Because I've been through it. [sniffles] [sobs] It first started when I was back home. But I had no one to talk to. It's good the body forgets pain. But the mental scars run deep. Even now. As soon as I was old enough, I ran away and started my career abroad. Elena, I didn't realise. [sobbing] But. what's worse in Hannah's case is that she can't even talk. She can't tell anybody, so even if there was something happening... we wouldn't know. But I want to help her. You know, I recognise all the signs and emotions. I had nobody to talk to. I'm sorry, Elena, I... Why didn't you tell me? Working with Hannah brought it all back. I'm sure something's not right. But I just... I just need to work it out. Elena, look, by your own admission then, you're biased, emotional. Look, I can tell you that there's nothing to worry about. Because I actually know what the problem is. You do? You see, Hannah had a twin sister, Angel. - She died recently. - Oh... And Hannah's found it very hard to handle. And her parents are still coming to terms with it, too. I guess it makes sense. That's terrible. But why didn't you tell me sooner? Well, I only found out about it the other day when I went to their house. You went to their house? Yes, I know. It's not completely professional, but... Well, I wanted to find out for myself. And I told them that it wasn't normal procedure, but they were fine. - So just, don't interfere. - But I really think... No, Elena, I understand. And I sympathize greatly with your own problems. But you're not being objective. And I'm afraid it's led you to the wrong assessment. Now, listen. I'm only going to ask you once, stay away from Hannah and her family, or it is your job on the line. [whimpers] But... [breathing heavily] [sniffling] Oh... [door creaks] [stirring] [stirring] I thought I heard something. [mumbles] What? [sighs] [groans] [breathing heavily] [floorboards creak] - You all right? - You made me jump. I thought I heard something. - [breathing heavily] - [Father] I'll check it out. She's probably just creeping around again. Yeah, her being slow is useful, but it does give me the creeps. [door creaks] [Father] She's definitely asleep. [Mother] All's well for a change then. [Father] All we need to do is get rid of those dolls. What did you keep them for anyway? [Mother] Souvenirs. [Father] Do you believe they even work? [Mother] Don't know. Some people think it's just superstition. [Father] Think we'll get any more trouble from that Elena, the assistant teacher? [Mother] Are you kidding? After what I said about the sweets? Keep this up and they'll treat us like royalty. [Father] You're so sexy when you're being a bitch. - You know that? - [Mother giggles] [Father] What would I be without you? [Mother] Remember, I'm the only one you have sex with. [Father] Remember how jealous you got with Angel and me? [birds singing] [Angel sings] I sit here waiting for you I sit here for so long Hey. [boy breathing heavily] What you up to, Hannah? [boy grunts] [Angel laughs] I can't believe they're giving us homework already. You just wait. You'll get given so much homework in high school, it's unbelievable. [boy] Hey. How did you manage to do that? You know me, um... I'm sorry. Um, come on Hannah, we... We have to go. Alright. [indistinct voices] [door opens] I thought I heard something. What have you got there? How on earth did you get hold of those? [scoffs] You really are just like Angel. What's going on? How'd she get our keys? Seems this little bitch wants us dead too. You really think they can harm us? I'll get the tape. We're going on a little trip. Come here. [screaming] [Mother] Get her down the stairs! [Hannah's screams muffled] Trying to hurt us like your sister did? We'll show you this bullshit doesn't work. - We've had enough! - [Father] Agreed! [muffled screaming continues] [Father] Shut up. [Hannah whimpering] Get in. [car engine starts] I've been expecting you. I'm sorry, do I know you? No, but Hannah and Angel do. And they need your help. Angel? Angel's dead. Who exactly are you? My name is Della. Come with me, I'll explain everything. [birds singing] [sighing] All that driving for that little brat. At least no one can hear her scream out here. Get her out. - Come on. Come on. - We'll teach you a lesson. You're so annoying. - [grunts] - Julie, what are you doing?! Look, no marks, okay? [groans] What's the school going to say? Oh, I'll make it easier for you to tie her up. She'll wake up soon. If she dies, fuck her. Ungrateful little snipe! How dare you think you can harm us with this voodoo crap? This is where you'll stay for a few days. [body thuds] [whirring] [Mother sighs] [sighing] You know, I'm so glad you didn't sell this place. I'd like to retire here. So pretty. [car engine starts] Hannah, I'm here. I'm gonna get you out of here. Let me in. Why didn't the dolls work? I should've been clearer. The dolls, they don't work straight away. You need to believe in it from your heart. I could tell that you weren't sure. I tried the dolls too, but... they caught me before they had time to take effect. I was hoping they'd work for you. But now, we only have one option. I warned you, they are not going to stop. Don't make the same mistake that I did. If you don't kill them first, they will kill you! Why can't you kill them for me? I'm scared. I had a chance. Like I said, there is only so much power I can have from this side. I need a real body to survive. [grunting] My strength will help you. Perhaps this was meant to be. [indistinct whispering] You'll get to love me being here. Just wait here for a day until they come back. I'll take it from there. [Mother] Wake up. Wake up! Where's your tape gone? Lucky you haven't bruised. Better get you home. You've got to get ready for school tomorrow. I hope you've learned your lesson out here. You see, the novel shows a dream of a small group of people and however, even though the dream never becomes a reality, it will thrive there. You see, the writer's leaving us with an optimistic message. Can anyone tell me what "optimistic" means? Hannah, is anything wrong? It means positive thinking. [stammering] Yes, that's correct. Well done, Hannah. Wow, the weirdo speaks. Katie! I'll be speaking to your parents again. You stupid fucking bitch! I hope, when your parents find out, they burn you to death! Miss, she can't speak to me like that. [Miss Palmer] Katie, shh! Hannah... [school bell rings] Hannah, please stay here a second. Miss Palmer and I would like a word. Please. Hannah, I'm so pleased you've started speaking, but why were you so offensive to Katie? It's not what I expected. Do your parents speak like that at home? Yes. And have they heard you speak today? [sighing] Can I go now, please? I've got a lot to do tonight. I'll phone your parents. They'll be pleased, I think. - I doubt it. - Hannah, please wait. Talk to us. Tell us what's going on. - [mutters] - What did she say? - [Elena] Hannah, please wait. - Elena, stop! [Elena] Hannah... [Miss Palmer] Whatever's going on, you'll make it worse. Elena... Oh, someone's in a strop. - [Elena panting] - [Miss Palmer] Just leave her. Are you still telling me I shouldn't get involved? You're unbelievable! I'll report it immediately. Let her go! No! [telephone rings] - Hello. - Hello, Mr. Hunt. This is Miss Palmer from school. Ah, Miss Palmer. Is everything all right? Um, I have what I think will be some good news for you. Okay. First, may I ask, has Hannah ever spoken? No, she's never spoken. Well, she started speaking at school this morning. What did she say? What's she told? Well, she said she had a lot of things to do tonight. And... then she ran off. Um, that's why I'm calling, to make sure everything's okay. Um, it all happened so fast, and we couldn't catch up with her. So she left alone. I'm so sorry. What have you done to make her run out like that? Have you called the police? No, she started speaking and then she was offensive to one of the other children, but I'm sure it was just the frustration coming out. I don't know. Well, whatever you've done, we've got it under control here. Her father's already gone out to look for her. Well, whatever you've done, we've got it under control here. - [phone beeps] - Why'd you put the phone down? Well, there's no point in talking more until we find out what's going on. I'll wring it out of her. Little bitch will be dead this time. [slams phone on table] Everything you've said so far has happened. She really has possessed her. How is this even possible? Yes. Angel is now within Hannah. Everything happens for a reason, and you are here to help Hannah. But remember, be careful of the police because you... You may be in trouble. Now go. Hannah needs you. But, can't you see what my fate is? Please? Yes. You'll be fine. Thank you. Now go. Where the fuck is she? Evil child's gonna spill the beans. Told you we should've locked her up, or killed her. I know, but the authorities might have gotten suspicious if two children had died so close together. Besides, I wanted my mileage out of her. [clattering upstairs] [scoffs] She's upstairs. She sneaked by us. Two can play at that game! [music box tune plays] [tune continues] [Father] Come on, Hannah. We know you're in here. Come on. It's only making things worse for yourself. Come on. It's not funny anymore. You've been a very, very bad girl. - [gasping] - [panting] - [moans] - [whimpers] I told you I would get you both back. - [gasping] It's Angel. - [whimpers] [grunting] [whimpers] [screaming] Oh! No... [screams] [sobbing] Hannah? [Father groans upstairs] Hello? [gasps, then gags] [panting] [Della] Be careful of the police because you... You may be in trouble. [phone beeps] [birds chirping] Hannah? - [groans] - [gasps] [pants, then moans] [whimpering] [whispers] I'm sorry. [inhales sharply] - [screams] - [Elena gasps] - [Mother choking] - [Angel] You're fine. Thank you for helping us. We're sorry. [gasping] [stammers] Angel? Yes. Both of us. [gasps] [sobbing] Della... she... She lied to me. No... No... No. [sobbing] You'll be fine. You'll be fine. Just like she said. Just like she said. - [ragged breathing] - I'm fine. I'm fine. [indistinct whispering] You're gonna be fine. You'll be fine. [laughing] It! [laughs] You're new here. Why are you here? Because I was protecting my sister... Hannah. What's your name? Angel. My parents were hurting Hannah. Why were they hurting Hannah? Because they could. Hannah, you have a visitor. Did you see all of this coming? Yes. Do the police think that Elena killed my parents? The investigation is still ongoing, they don't have enough evidence. But they'll never know the truth. It will remain a mystery. [indistinct whispering] Goodbye... my guardian... Angel. |
