The Tribes of Palos Verdes (2017)
1
I'm 16.. Already in trouble at school and unfortunately have blond hair. My mother liked to joke that natural blonds were usually selfish while dyed blonds were pathological liars. Jim is my twin. My only true friend. Jim was the one person in the whole world I could really talk to. Who I felt comfortable with. That may sound kind of fucked up but it's a twin thing. Don't worry, someday your hair will be brown like mine and then people will finally take you seriously and then it'll turn grey. And they won't. In every family, there was that one person that was the glue that held it all together. That was Jim. He was the one who could cheer mom up when she got down. I brought out something different in her. We'd just moved from Michigan to Palos Verdes. You see, it was always my father's dream to move to California. To be a heart surgeon to the rich and famous. My mother wasn't sure at first about moving. She said she was allergic to all the Botox earthquakes and exercise. But my dad insisted that the sunshine and sea air was just what the doctor ordered.. The doctor being him. How's that pool? Whoa, don't get the new house wet! Not on... Not on the first day. Oh, look at this. I couldn't believe they were selling mass-produced Buddhas at the drugstore. - I'll take a regular. - Here you go. Thank you. Oh. Hey, I think I see a whale. - No way. - I do! Right there, below the seaweed. - I don't see anything. - Look. - To new beginnings. - To sunshine! - To sunscreen. - To us. Which us? All of us. I always said we'd move to paradise, didn't I? - Yeah- - Let's go down here. I'm gonna throw you in the ocean. In school, we learned about people who came West in wagon trains to start new lives. So did my family. Even my mom was doing her best to be hopeful. So vast. Yeah. We're gonna be happy here. Yup. Well, I'm happy already. This is so goddamn vast. I wish I could go back and hold on to that moment forever and just be happy for everything that we had. - Hey, Phil. - What? - Let's not go tonight. - What? Let's stay home. Let's stay home. Phil, let's stay home. It's important to go out, meet new people. This party is, you know, to welcome us. Well, it's also important to stay home and make this our home and fill it with memories. - I know. - Yeah. But we already said, we have to go. - Oh. - Give me a little more. - Mm, no. - Come on. - No, no, no. - Yes. - Look... - What? If you want me to get ready I have to get ready. We're gonna be late to your important party and your spray tan's rubbing off on me. - Phil. Hi. - Oh, my God. 50 great to see you. - Ava, hello. Hello. - Hi. Hi. Oh. My wife, Sandy. - Hi, Sandy. - Ava. - This is exciting. - Yes. - Fiesta. - This your first night? - It's our first fiesta. - At the club? Yes. - Do you like the house? - Oh, my God. - Oh. - Yeah. So you're a cardiologist? Yes. I read all about you in the "Best Doctors." You invented that cardiovalvola, right? I'm impressed. You've done your research. Well, I used to work as a drug rep. I tell ya, when you've held a, a beating human heart... Excuse me. I can't even look at raw liver. I mean, I'm totally vegan. - I'm Jim. - Nice to meet you. It's nice to meet you. I like this. Oh, thank you. Uh, welcome to the club. Thanks. You just moved to town? Are your kids here? Uh, yeah, they're here somewhere. That's what we love about the club. We never have to worry about them. Oh. Let's go home. Let the kids hang out with their new friends. Could you just, just try to act like you're having a good time, alright, baby? - I am trying. - Okay. I don't know if these Xanax are even working anymore. Maybe ease up on the taquitos. They work better on an empty stomach, alright? Let me guess, your father is a, a finalist in the limbo competition. Yup. He's wearing a sombrero. I knew it. So I was reading this thing about how whales go to Mexico to have their calves and then they travel back with them. But they have these half-day trips. We can go out on boats and you can see them. Oh, honey, 6 hours on a boat? Oh, God, you'd die of boredom and seasickness. Yeah, it'll be probably pretty lame anyways. Look at Jim. He does take after his father. I don't know who you take after. You... You're.. Your own special person, honey. That's good. Hm. I'll go find el senor. Oh, get us out of here. We learned at school about the tribes that originally inhabited PV. The Chumash and the Tonga Native American tribes. There are new tribes now, of course. Hey, what's up with your sister? Why doesn't she come hang out with us? My father said things would be different here. But I knew Jim would want to be popular and I wouldn't. Oh, she just does her own thing. That's cool. That's cool. Yeah. She's awesome. Phone down In the back, please. Anybody offer any opinions? Do you remember? Does this ring a bell, the word mana when we studied Proper Asia and Polynesia? Their society was structured.. Hey, wait up! Property always sold fast in Palos Verdes. People liked that the grass had to be kept green and cut attractively that the walls of each house had to be painted every 3 years and that the buildings were required to have tiled roofs. The beaches were maintained daily with special machines to clean the sand and thresh, mix and spit it out into crystals of immaculate white powder. The police knew each family by name and by make and model of their car. There were no lights on the football stadium because the locals didn't want anyone from out of town there after dark or anywhere In PV, really. The beaches were not private but they might as well be. The residents didn't want any outsiders ruining their zillion dollar views either. There were no streetlights fast food stands or apartment buildings. All outlawed by the city ordinance. A chaos of stars filled the skies of Palos Verdes. But everything else was regulated. Wow. - Whoo! - Hey! Hey! Hey, keep it down! Do you know how late it is? Oi, lady. Go back inside. I'm gonna call the police. Go away! Don't be bothering 'cause we'll be louder! 10 whole seconds, no turning. Don't get up. What the hell? - Where'd you get this? - Don't worry about it. We should get another one. Let's ask mom. - Do you really want one? - Yeah. We don't need to ask mom. Nah, people will laugh. Maybe we should go somewhere else. Don't be such a baby. J Ooh ooh ooh J J Ooh ooh ooh J When we were kids, Jim and I had a treehouse in our backyard. We'd pull up the ladder and no one could get to us. I always liked it best when it was just the two of us. For the first time in a long time it felt like we were in our treehouse again. J Ooh ooh ooh J J Ooh ooh ooh J J Ooh ooh ooh N Shit. It's the bayboys. Keep it cool. Hey, where you going? Just takin' my son surfing. Yeah. Are you? Dad, let's just go somewhere else. No, no, no. It's okay. Look, dude. We're not gonna be in your way. I don't wanna put you down in front of your son. - Really? - Get the fuck out. - Dad, let's just go... - Beat it. What are you guys starin' at? Shit. Got out just in time. They don't own the waves. Actually, they do. That guy Chad his stepbrother, Alex, is in my math class. He's never there. Chad's like 30 years old and he still lives at home. Oh, baby. Wow, mom. Digging the green. I feel like Peter Pan. Mm. Mm. I can't believe you moved us to a town where grownup women wear green tennis dresses on purpose. Oh, look at this. "Do you have the face you deserve after 30?" Welcome to the ageless future. I have the perfect anti-aging solution. It's called death. - Come on. - Wow, mom, that's dark. You're beautiful and when the time comes I know plenty of doctors... - Oh, God. - God, dad, really? - Oh, yeah. - If that's what you want. I'm gonna be late tonight. I have a late consult. Have fun at the club today. Maybe invite some of the girls for, uh, barbecue this weekend. That would be fun, right, kids? You could invite some friends, too, if you want. Bibb salad with the dressing on the side. Chopped salad for me, no dressing. I'll have a cheeseburger and fries, please. You must have a fantastic metabolism. Oh, well, I'll tell you my metabolism secret. Smoking. It makes you poop. Cleans you out. I'm joking. I'm just joking. Phil and I just, we like, we like to joke. Sorry, not lunchtime appropriate. So how are you liking our little slice of paradise here? It's the waves. I mean, they're so loud. They're in... incessant. I... I can't sleep. And the surfers drag their surfboards over the ice plant and ruin everything. And why do your kids roam around in packs stand at the edge of cliffs like little praying mantises? What's wrong with them? I'm sorry, but Dr. Mason isn't currently in the office. Really? He's not there? I could take a message for you or... He said he had a late procedure. No, ma'am. He left at 4:00 p.m. I see. He said he was leaving early today. I'll go ahead and put a message in that you called. Well, thank you. No problem, Mrs. Mason. I guess the heart disease just cleared on up. Okay. Okay. Mom? I need you to sign something for school. You're so young and pretty. Find someone who loves you for who you are on the inside not your face. People get tired of faces. You guys want juice? Fuck. Hey, what the hell's going on? This isn't good. This... This, it's not healthy. I'm not sure my health is a, was a real issue... Well, I'm a doctor. Health is something that I know a thing or two about. You don't care about my health. You care about my cheekbones... I care about your goddamn black hole moods. How you suck us in. And sometimes, Sandy, I swear... Swear what? I swear what? You'd feel so much better if you just got dressed.. And went out. Mom's really losin' it, isn't she? She's not. She's just.. Alone here, you know? And those pathetic plastic people don't like her and dad rags on her all the time. Oh, shit. Come on, let's get out there. What's that? - Huh? - What is that? A marijuana cigarette? - What? - Give me that thing. Let's see it. Thanks. - Here we go, boys. - You got a deal. - Thank you. - Of course. You actually live here or you just surf here? Just stay on the Inside, okay? Don't snake our waves. - Yeah. - Yeah? Of course. Yeah. Who's that out there? That's my sister, actually. Out there, boys. These assholes keeps multiplying, man. The bayboys had all these ridiculous rules that Jim wanted us to follow. For the bayboys, the more you tried to look like a surfer the less of a surfer you were. They never wore colored wetsuits or anything bright, modern or neon. They rode retro boards and didn't do tricks or fancy stunts. You just rode waves. You rode and you didn't fall off. I didn't care what anyone wore or how they rode. I just wanted to surf. The boys would tell me I had to wait in line behind them and not to snake waves. They would tell me I should stick to cheerleading or ballet. But I didn't let it bother me. Hey, don't get too close to her. I think she's on the rag like that old sharkie. They warned me to wait my turn and to not take their waves but I didn't listen. I went in front, first, behind over the top, it didn't matter. You only get a turn if you fight for one. From the Earth from the sand I Even remade me by hand: Round and round on the wheel a The way it is the way it feels A Hoo hoo hoo hoo a Mmmmmmmm Mmmmmmmm J Aah aah aah J Do I even know you at all? Do I even know you at all? Mmmmmmmm Mm mm mm mm Chanel. I knew it. I knew it. I knew it. I knew it. I knew it. I knew it. Hey. - I have an announcement. - Oh- We're gonna start a new life. I'm no longer gonna be fake. The ladies of Palos Verdes can take their perfect lives and shove it up their asses. No tennis clothes. No Lancome hydrate. No balanced meals. We are gonna move to Blaine, Minnesota where the women don't wear tennis skirts and you won't be faced with so much temptation. Uh, I can't leave here. I have a job. I have patients. Fine. I'll take the kids. Go pack. Go pack! I'm not going to fucking Minnesota. It's just you and me then, Jim. - Alright. - Hey! - What's going on? - Damn it, Phil. Jim's friend saw you having lunch with her. She saw you! - You know who I mean. - I don't. Okay. Okay. Uh, uh, what are you talkin' about? I eat lunch all the time with nurses or pharmaceutical salesmen... Or cute little tennis ladies. I spoke to a lawyer. Jim, can you pack, please? Can we get ready? Seriously? Is it, you... you wanna leave with your mom? You're a liar. You said things would be different. Why don't you just go fuck another nurse? Jim. - Jim, wait! - What? You wouldn't actually go with mom, would you? Oh, come on, Medina. Where's she gonna go? She never leaves the house. Look, she's just putting that asshole on notice, okay? Got these from the, uh, Korean booth. - They're OxyContin. - Yeah. Here, take one. Oh my gosh a Oh my gosh a Easy easy a Hold it down hold it down A Oh my gosh a Do it. Do it. Oh my gosh N Ah, gross. - Aah. - So gross. No, you don't need anymore. Don't drink anymore. Taking you away from here, come on. Think your mom should stop the flashlight. Looks like a fucking lighthouse. Yeah, she's always pacing around in her robe up there. It's fucking spooky. Watch this. Jim! - What the fuck? - Go, go, go! Alright, Jimmy! Fucking epic! It was stupid what you did. Yeah. I was pretty wasted. No. Annoying. Imagine the waves in Bali. Or Fiji. We should go there someday. That would be so cool. Surfing there in huge waves. Let's take a break. Why are you and mom still fighting? It's kind of complicated. Um, we got married so young, you know? I don't know, maybe you're not supposed to be with the same person your whole life. But honestly, I think that your mom would be happier without me.. In the long run. Are you serious? Well, it's complicated. Um.. Something happened. I met someone. I mean, I've fallen in love. She's a terrific lady. It's our real estate agent. - What? - It's Ava. It was a complete surprise. - I never expected it. - What? I'm so sorry, babe. I'm so sorry. - Oh, my God. - What? I'm sorry, honey. I have another chance to be happy now. Another chance at my life. Baby, I gotta take it. You understand that, right? Dad, you can't just leave. That's not fair. We're gonna come and stay with you, right? Of course. No, no, no. Ava and I have already talked about that. Thing is, um, she has a son, Adrian. So she just wants to wait until she feels a little more secure in our relationship. Honey, we're gonna be together all the time. It's gonna be terrific. I just need your support on this. Especially when I tell your mom. Goddammit. Where would you like to start with sorry... It doesn't have anything to do with your friends. Would you like to start with sorry? Did you find somebody skinnier than me? Did you find someone who's twat wasn't blown out birthing your babies? Did you find.. What are you looking for in a woman? What are you looking for? Why don't you start with that? We've run our course! Fucking run our course? Why the fuck did I move to California if I had run my fucking course with you? Are you fucking... I'll take the fall for this. You'll take the fall! God! Of course, you'll take the fall. You have made me crazy! God! This is gonna be better for everyone. Right, Medina? Tell your mother, please. Tell your mother, please, Medina. Right? What? Right, Medina? What? You what? Fuck you. Do you have something you wanna say to me, Medina? - Medina! Medina! - Hey! Medina! What are you talking to Medina for? What does she know that I don't know? I'm your wife, goddammit. I had sex with you for 20 fucking years! Our fucking real estate agent? We came out here a year ago and we took her to lunch. I know. You held my hand under the table. What, have you been fucking each other on text? On Facebook? Get the fuck out of my house. I'm embarrassed to be your wife. Get the fuck out of my house! Oh, boy. Oh, man, I.. I don't know what to say. I'm so sorry. I just snapped. I just snapped for a sec. Can we forget all of this? Can we please just forget all of this? I mean, why'd we move here in the first place? Oh, you're the one who wanted the money. And the Mercedes. If you don't care about that let's stop all this then. Alright. Credit cards are for emergencies only. Come on, Phil, there's... The checks will come weekly. There's no reason to take things this far. I know it's been so long I 4 Since we saw each other last A Come home. You promised you'd never leave me. For better or for worse. That's the deal. Remember? Phil, come on. For the sake of the kids. Don't do this to them! I will get help. I will. I will. I love you. We love each other. I've tried everything I could. 3 So long since we saw each other 3 I've tried everything I could. Nothing's gonna change. J I'm sure we'll find some way I 3 To make the time pass a Hey moon if I was to fall a I won't fall so deep 4 Though I doubt I'm gonna I You can wake me up if you wanna A I would hate for you to hang there all alone I The whole night through 4 Hey moon a My old friend A Hey moon a The night is coming to an end a Hey moon a Come back soon N Jimmy. Yeah? I can't sleep. Would you come sit in my room? Sure, mom. Sure. Now is the time to take control of your.. Now is the time to take control of your life. Now is the time to take control of your life. Let's find dad and cheer him on, huh? He loves that. - Mom? - Oh, shit. Mom. Mom. Alright, pick it up. Hey. I called him softly. Phil! - Alright. - Hey, Phil! Oh, look at this. Look at this little fucking playdate. I found you. Hi. Hi. Can I join? I know you've always wanted me to join. So here I am to make your wish come true. Kids, go back to the car, please. Let's see. Oh, good, here's a racket. Where were we? Where's the score here with this little game? - Owl - Love-nothing. Whoa, hey! Come on, Sand... - Motherfucker! - Calm down! Maybe you wanna teach me because I am a beginner and you are quite a teacher. - Please don't do this... - You are quite a te.. I would back the fuck up if I were you, Phil. Please don't do this. Let's see, who did you like to teach? Lynn G., remember that bitch? - Jesus Christ. Alright. - Amber, Gigi. Motherfucker! Oh, Ava, didn't you know, huh? You're just another bead on a long string, honey. You thought you found your meal ticket here with Dr. Phil. Well, let me guarantee you something, okay? All you're gonna end up with is a mouthful of jizz. Come on, kids. Shut your mouths. Let's go. Jim! Hey, look who it is. Hey, dude. Picked up some new shit if you want some? Yeah, sure. I'll call you later. Alright, I'll see you out there. Well same old Bobby same old beat 3 Oh, holy shit. I think that's Dan Edder. Guy's a legend around here. I've seen pictures of him in magazines. He drives to, like, Mexico and Nicaragua and surfs big breaks. The same old clutch same old streets I Oh, man! Alex says he never surfs the bay except on big days. And that he doesn't talk. He's really, really good. Easy come and easy 90 N Keep it cool. - What's up? - Hey. You two gettin' out there? Yeah, for sure. Great bay. Good for the take-offs. Hey. You come back next time and I'll show you the secret spot. Hey. Oh, hi, kids. - Hey. - You look nice. What, you have a new girlfriend or somethin'? No. Where are you going? Just to a party. Someone's house. Apparently, there's a bowling alley.. In the house. Who's gonna be at this party? I don't know. You haven't perfected your father's signature and we have a lot of work to do. We have checks. I don't want you going out until you have it perfected. You... You're the man of the house now. Alright? Go fish. - Jimmy. - Huh? Go fish, Jimmy. Super plus! Hot, hot, hot! Turn it all on. Turn it.. Jimmy, go to the kitchen. I like it really nice and cool. Here. Oh, wait a minute. - Here, chandelier. - Over here. Over here. Come here, Jimmy. Oh, that's very good. Take this, Phil. Take this, Phil. What do you think of that, Phil? Hm. Oh, my God. Okay. Alright, put them down. Oh, it's like playing with a.. Alright. Jim, go fish. - You sleepy? - Hm? Sleepy bunny. You sleepy.. - Hey. - What's up? - You wanna come in? - Sure. You hang out with the gay boys, huh? Not really, they're my brother's friends, but.. Pseudo-macho dipshits if you ask me. So where's your favorite place that you've traveled to? Mexico's good. Wash it down with this. Okay. - You alright? - Yeah. No. Stop. No, I don't really wanna do this. - It's alright. - No, I don't want to. Don't be.. No, it's fine. It's fine. Trust me. Trust me. Stop. Stop. Well, hey, hot stuff. Mm. You looked great out there. Thanks. Give me a sec. Yeah. And how do you know who I am? I'm Adrian. I've been living with your dad. You shouldn't be here. My brother's gonna kill you. Well, I... I just wanna talk... - I don't. - That's.. Did my dad send you? Good. Looks rough out there. - Do you even surf? - Yeah, I surf. Just a little bit better than that girl in the white bikini. Well, you can't surf at Lunada. Maybe try Pratt Point. They're the worst part about moving here, you know. How do I get to Pratt? Someone has to show you. Oh. Sandy? It's Joe. Joe Pitchuck. We met a while ago. Uh, I work at the, uh, Coldwell Banker too. Oh. - You okay? - Oh. Yeah, I'm... I'm great. Everything is pretty terrific, Joe. I'm sorry about the article. Yeah, well, I can imagine some pretty dark things but I didn't think he would.. Buy a palazzo for her. Yeah, it was quite a sale. I know 'cause, uh, that bitch stole the, uh, listing right out from under me. But listen to me. You're a really terrific lady. And this is no reflection on you, okay? Thank you. Thank you for saying that. If there is anything you need you know, just give me a call. Here's my number. Gosh, Joe, those are those are really kind words. Thank you. Nobody reads that stuff. Check out these mushrooms, man. Trust me, you'll never have as much fun in Astronomy, bro. - Yeah. Yeah. - Yeah. Bro, don't do it. Bro, don't fucking throw up. Alright. Eat it. Eat it. Eat it. You're gonna fucking waste it, bro. - Eat it. - No fucking way. Eat it, bro. Fucking eat it. That's $20 in the fucking sink. Eat it, okay? Get it all. You want it all in there. Gross. It's over oh old friend A J Oh it's over J It's over it's over a Oh old friend I: Hey. I wanna read you something. Okay. A plus? A plus? You're a genius, Medina. A genius. A plus. Here, read it to me. Read it to me. "The Marubo tribe from Africa believes that no one in their tribe can ever safely leave..." Marubo. Pay attention. "Sometimes Marubo children sneak away to Cape Town "but the elders are smart. They keep everyone's soul in a jar." Wow. Soul jar. That's cool. "The kids have to come back for their souls." If they don't, they die soulless. "And a lot of them do." That's sad. What they're trying to say is nothing's worse than leaving your tribe. Not even dying. Maybe we're the tribe of Palos Verdes. You and me. You keep my soul.. And I keep yours. We stick together, no matter what. I have an announcement! We're starting a new life. I have a good idea And your dad's not here to stop me If We are going to be surrounded by beauty. Our life will be one of style. We could get a gazebo! New set of pool furniture. It's indoor-outdoor living. That's what it is. That's why you move to California and we're gonna have it! Would you like a playhouse? Like a little house with everything in it that's just the right size? Phil Mason. Phil Mason. It's black. It's black. Phil Mason. Can someone get me a telephone, please? Order. Hello, yes. From the Palisades Collection. King size sleigh bed with a beachy feel. Yes, with the mattress. Organic. Yes. You have a 5? Oh, look who's all dressed up for daddy. I'm not dressed up. Jim, are you ready? It's just dinner. You think your dad's gonna bring his new son? Dad really wants to see you. No, I'm over it. Oh, thank you. Look at that. That's a whole fish right there, huh? That's the whole fish. Do you know that human beings are the only species that befriend their prey before they eat them? Oh, God. - Here we go. - Hm. We're also the only species that flies airplanes and transplant hearts. You know, when you eat vegetables, you kill them. I don't think that's, uh, correct, mom. Adrian goes to Westridge, the brainbox school. He's gonna study Animal Sciences in the fall if he aces his finals. - So, Phil. - Hm? The guys only allow white people in this club? - No, no, no, no. - Oh, my God. There's Jerry. - There's the Wongs. - Okay, well.. Medina, what about you? What are you interested in? - Surfing. - Yeah? Really like surfing a lot. You like surfing? That's great. I surfed once. I was pretty good, but then I got, like 4 stitches on my chin, so.. Well, we got through that. Thank you for coming. He's a strange one, huh? Yeah, he is. Hey, I need you to, uh talk to your mother about something for me. I have to go to Paris for a medical conference. Ava's never seen the Riviera. Um.. Can you tell her you're okay with that? You are, right? Yeah, I could talk to her. Thanks. I appreciate it. - Yup. I'll see you soon. - Okay, sweetie. He didn't even say goodbye. He doesn't leave for a week. You should call him. Really? I don't know. I keep trying to laugh with the boys. Everything I say sounds weird and wrong. Like someone's talking through my mouth. Do you ever feel that way? Yeah. Sometimes, I guess. Can I ask you a question? Yeah. Do you love surfing? Yeah. I mean, really love it? Yeah, I do. I don't. Of course, you do. You're so good at it. I shouldn't have hit dad that time. He hates me now. No, he doesn't, Jim. Nice spot. You know what? Let's go somewhere else. I can show you something. So what are they doing? They're putting them back into the wild. They take malnourished pups and feed them back to health for 3 months and then off they go. Oh, my gosh. They're so cute. So what are you, an animal freak? Yup. I'm gonna be a wildlife vet. That's pretty cool. I think this thing with your dad and my mom it sucks. And I'm sorry. Do you think my dad's gonna come back or are they actually in love? Who knows? - I hate the towel girls. - Mm. - They wear all match... - All the matching towels. Watch the popular guys surf. I hate everyone in Palos Verdes. Seriously, you're the only cool person I met here. When we're out in the moonlight: Looking up at the stars above A You can't tell anyone that we're friends. Okay? I won't tell anyone we're friends. Baby 3 And I hate people who don't share their food. Well, I usually hate people who eat my food. I really like you though. Sandy beach was makin' love A I'm still chewing my chip. Feels so good walking side by side a Wanna be with you all my life 4' x Oh baby n It's taking a little while, but he'll feel much better after he gets a little bit rested I promise. Um... This is my teenage daughter. - She's all hysterics. - Mom! - Okay. - What happened? Is he... He's fine, Medina. He's fine. - Is he in here? - Yes, but shh. Uh, Mrs. Mason, if I may ask you a few questions. Okay. Has your son been using, uh, alcohol or drugs lately? Absolutely not. He's just under a lot of stress. His father ran off with a skank. We're running out of money, uh.. Have you considered anxiety medication? Oh, I have a prescription. Thank you. I'm sorry. I meant for your son. Are you okay? Yeah. But you scared me.. So much. Please stop, Jim. I'm really glad you're here. Hey. Wow. - You came. - Come on. Come on. Jesus Christ. How are you feeling? Come on. I know that, uh, it's hard when everyone else is doing it. Just don't, right? You're smarter than that. Yeah. Just... Just stupid. - It won't happen again. - Good. Good. Hey, dad, can we come to Paris with you guys? Oh, my God. I would so love that. Yeah? Um, this trip is not for fun. You know, it's a... It's a medical conference. But next time, definitely yes. Yes. Besides I don't think your mother would be too thrilled, right? How's it going over there? She doing okay? Sure. You would not believe the bills that I'm getting. Does she ever turn the lights off? I hope she's not off her meds. She's not crazy, dad. She's just sad. Yeah, I know. Well, I'm gonna call and check on you guys every week. And when I get home we'll figure things out, alright? Dad, I really don't think it's a good idea that you go. Okay. This is a work trip. I have to be there, alright? I'm gonna set a good example for Jim. Someone has to be an adult around here. Everybody doesn't get to go bonkers. Hi, Mrs. Mason. Don't be long, son. Hey. Hey, I'm sorry I'm here. I... I hope it's not weird. I just didn't hear from you last night. We were supposed to go out, so worried. Oh, no, it's.. We just had.. Mom's really sick. Had to take her to the emergency, so.. Oh, okay. God, she gets sick a lot. Yeah. It's been a really long night. I should.. Oh, yeah, yeah. Okay, um.. - Get some rest. - Alright. A lot of terrible things could happen, you know? You could get her pregnant. She could force you to marry her. I'm not getting married, mom. I'm too young. Well, that's my point. I don't even like her that much. Well.. Then there's no point in spending so much time with her, is there? Honey, I'm just going through a rough patch, okay? When you're with me, it helps me so much 'cause you're the man of the house. And you're more of a man than your father ever was. 50, hey. No more trips to the hospital, alright? That's not fun. Baby, it's just till I get my feet under me. I promise. I'm just trying to look after the two of you. - Hey. I heard what happened to Jim. You okay? I'm not sure anyone in the family's okay. I'm sorry, I... I... I wish I could come over there right now. Yeah, that'd be nice. 50, um.. When you going off to that veterinarian school? Um, It's a real school, yes. Do they have, like, fraternities? You're gonna join a frat? Well, yeah, of course, oh, you know I'll be an Oma Ki Kappa Sig bro. I like picturing that. Did you hear Johnny fucked Kelly Bob? - No! - No way. I swear to God. - What are these guys? - Yo, you can't surf here. Hey, ha, just lax- Fuck's with this guy? Hey, you're not fucking listening to me? You can't fucking surf here. Dude, you don't own this fucking beach. - Fucking told you! - Get off! Get off! - What are you doing? - Come on, get off! - Get off me. - Fuck off. Wow. This is weird. Does he hide millions under the mattress? They hide it in a fake cantaloupe in the fridge. You like it? Yeah. It was nice last night. Yeah, it was. I hope you don't get in trouble though because of me. No, I'm gonna be fine. I have my window, so.. - Jesus! - Get out of the car. Wait, no. No, don't get out. Don't get out. Medina. Medina. No. - Fuck you, asshole! - Stop it! Get the fuck out of the car! - Jim, stop! - Medina. Hey, you already got my dad! - Get back in the car. - Isn't that enough? - I don't think I... - Just go! - You stay the fuck... - Stop! Stop! - I promise you, okay? - You're okay? I can handle this. Please just 90. Okay? Jim. Jim. Jim. I thought you ran away for good, man. Jim. - Jim, stop. - Please don't leave me. - Look how I am. - Jim. I'm right here, okay? Okay? Okay? You're all I've got, Jim. You're all I've got. Yeah, I'm good. I'm good. Well, you gonna come with me? "Are you gonna keep acting a" crazy? - Yeah. Yeah, 90 on. - Come in. - Come in. - Yeah. Come on, Jim. You're good, okay? - Okay. - Okay. Otherwise leave a message at the tone. "Hey, dad, uh" I've been trying to call you. Maybe your phone doesn't work there. Um.. I don't know. I'm worried about Jim. It's... It's... It's urgent, dad. What's so urgent? I hope your father isn't teaching you to lie like him. I'm worried about Jim. I'm worried about him, mom. I'm... I'm taking care of Jim. You don't need to worry about Jim. You're not taking care of him, mom! Okay, he's right in front of your fucking face and he's not okay! Why are you talking to me like this? I am his mother! And you're out all night, anyway! What do you know? Are you a slut? I hear your computer ringing at 2:00 in the morning. - What kind of person... - Hey, hey. An amazing person. - A great person. - Cut it out! Tell your sister to stop fighting me! Jim, come on. Let's go surf. No, no, no, it's Saturday. Jimmy, it's our day. We have so much to do. Jim, she treats you like you're her husband even though you're not! How dare you? I do not! Take it back, young lady! - Jim. - Hmm. Jim, wake up. Let's go surf. Be careful with that. It's brand-new. It's brand-new. Right in. Oh, great. There should be big things. There should be a couple of headboards and a couple of big rugs. You know what? This couch can go. Just give it away. Ralph Lauren. From Neiman Marcus. Just.. I'm live here in the exclusive gated community of Palos Verdes. Yet another firebreak and this one in Crystal Cove. A resident reported seeing a man described as tall, possibly Latino and fast. And we've been able to track down that resident... What did you do? Have a seat. I got you a gift. Ta-da! Oh, thank you. It was Jim's idea. We can be a family again. Oh. By the way, the house now.. It's a thing of beauty. - You like it? - You're an artist. Oh, thank you. You're too sweet. The tide's turning. My sentiments exactly. Hm. I had 3 offers withdrawn all because of these fires and... and it's killing my business. It's crazy. Well, you know what it is? It's a plague on the people of Palos Verdes for their greed, for their trade and for the younger model philosophy. I mean, what goes around comes around. Someone should take a match and burn the whole place down. More what? Potatoes? Salad? Mm, that wouldn't be very good for my business now, would it? Well, you're the one who said it. Joe Pitchuck, dedicated to raising the values of the community. Well, I said dedicated to, uh, raising the property values of the community. I... I... I don't think the people are so bad. I mean.. They're my friends, Sandy. Well, I guess now wouldn't be the best time to put the house on the market, huh, kids? Shoot Hold on there a sec. This is one special property, you know? We could have.. This house listed in, like, tomorrow. You didn't ask me where I'm going. I thought I knew. Okay, Sandy. Let's please not talk about it. Oh, Jim, I think.. I think maybe you should escort Mr. Pitchuck out. Um.. It's okay. Ahem. Mom? Your mother, the optimist. Oh, I'm so dumb. It's okay, mom. I'm live here in the exclusive gated community of Palos Verdes with Kristen Dalton, a homeowner out here. And Kristen, your thoughts? Our house is way nicer than hers now. Maybe we'll get lucky and the arsonist will burn down your father's house. We don't have crime here. We haven't even had a crime since 1916. I mean, I left Encino to get away from this kind of shit. Okay, alright, well, thanks for talking to us. And now I'm getting reports of another fire. Look at it go. What if it comes here? We'll jump in the ocean. What the hell are you doing here? I couldn't reach you. - I told you not to... - Medina! I have something to show you. You okay? Hey, hey, hey, hey. What's going on? Wanna get out of here? On that beach. Surf. - Just get away. - I can't do this. Why? Why, why not? I have to be there for Jim. You know, we don't... We don't have much time. I know. You're leaving and he's staying. I have to go. I just spoke to your father. This isn't working. Um.. He's decided.. Medina, you're gonna go stay with him for a while. Jim, you'll stay here. And that's how we'll move forward. I knew it. Jim, she's lying to you. Dad would never say that. I'm gonna call him. You've reached Dr. Phil Mason. If this is a life-threatening emergency, hang up and call 911. Otherwise leave a message at the tone. Jim. Let's get out of here. Please just let me sleep. I really mean it, Jim. We're gonna get in the car and we're gonna drive. We're gonna get the hell away from here. We can go to all the places we talked about. You're my tribe, Jim. It's just you and me. Okay? Okay. You're right, Medina. - I'm so sorry. - It's okay. One day a Here. I wish it didn't have to be like this. I know. I wish we could celebrate.. In some way. Celebrate what? We're both getting away from this place. Yeah, we are. I keep I keep 3 I keep it in my pocket 4' These thoughts of you 4 Thank you. Good luck. I take it on a To watch it x These thoughts of you If Hey. Sorry I'm late. You excited? I feel so great. Why are you looking at me like that? Why are you looking at me like that? Stop. Okay. Hey, I've got something to show you. - I got something... - Jim, stop. Come grab your bag. - Come on! - Okay. Come on. Come on. Storm's moving in. It's a sign. Come on, Jim, we gotta go. I'm sorry if I fucked things up. I didn't mean to. It's okay, Jim, but we gotta go, okay? She said someone should burn the place down. Jim, remember what we talked about. We're gonna get the hell out of here. You don't need to do that! I know what I'm doing. I love you, Medina. No, Jim. Mom! It's over. It's really over. The fire department found Jim incoherent on Pratt Point acid. They were pleased to be able to announce that the PV arsonist had been caught and that law and order would once again return to peaceful Palos Verdes. Did you ever see him start a fire? When we found your son, he was wandering disoriented talking to himself. He didn't know where he was and wasn't able to answer any questions. We found Vicodin and cocaine in his possession. He appears to have had a substance-induced psychotic episode or break. Young brains are more susceptible. Especially to environmental stressors. How long... How long do you want to keep him here? We're gonna need to keep him here for a while. I think everyone's gonna need an adjustment period. Okay. I got you something. How are you doing? They found the arsonist. It was a tennis dad. How crazy is that? I'm sorry that I thought it was you. You scared me. I didn't know what you were thinking anymore. I feel very peaceful now. I'm gonna leave this place soon. We're gonna get you out of this place. We're gonna go on a trip. Somewhere where we're surfing every day. And we're gonna be in warm water. We're gonna go to all the places that we talked about. I'm gonna miss those big winter waves. I love you so much, weirdo. Oh. I love you so much. Hm. Property sells fast in PV. People like that the grass must be green and cut attractively. That all the roofs must be made of red tile and the walls of each house must be painted every 3 years. The PV beaches were maintained daily. The city used special machines to clean the sand that thresh, mix and spit out the crystals into immaculate, fine white powder. It was one of these machines that found Jim lying face down at Cabrillo Beach 15 miles south of the PV peninsula. He overdosed on a bad mixture of prescription drugs he had stolen. His heart just stopped beating. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. There were only 2 days in my entire life that I didn't see Jim. I couldn't imagine a life without him. My father wants me to move in with him. He says I deserve every advantage. He hopes I can teach him to surf. My mother calls from Joshua Tree. She says she's getting help now. That we can start a whole new life and that my new room is ready whenever I am. I'm leaving PV.. Alone. I'm going to surf the world just like Jim and I had talked about. Hawaii, Bali, Java and Mexico. I have no itinerary. No plans to return. Maybe my tribe is out there somewhere. The ocean is where I belong. I say goodbye to Jim one last time from the bay. I know that Jim will be watching me wherever I go with a huge smile on his face. There's a lot for you to watch out for in the ocean. Sharks, rays, riptides, jellyfish and unpredictable currents. But here's some remedies for its dangers. When you get stung by a jellyfish pee immediately on the sting. Uric acid will soothe the pain. Duct tape can pretty much fix everything. A ripped wetsuit, a dinged board. And if you get swept into a riptide try to remain calm then swim like hell with the horizon. Other than that, it's pure magic. After all of this time After all these seasons And your own decision to go to the water For reason It's only the ocean and you After all of these lines Will all be erased soon Out with the tide And they come back with the waves It's only the ocean and you You don't want You don't wait You don't love no but you don't hate You just roll Over me And you pull me in And you pull me in When this work is done When this coat is dry When this world's too much It will be Only the ocean and me When these sails go up Mountains fade away Stars come out I'm finally free Now it's only the ocean and me 'Cause you don't want You don't wait You don't love no But you don't hate You just roll Over me And you pull me in And you pull me in |
