Witchery (1988)
[PANTING]
[GASPS] [DEEP BREATHS] [PANTING] [WAVES CRASHING] [GASPS] God, you scared me. Who were you expecting? Phantom of the Opera? I'm sorry, I was so lost in thought. [BIRDS CHIRPING] I think you've been working too hard on your book about that witch's night. Well... after all, that's what I'm here to study, right? Right. Absolutely right. [FOOTSTEPS] [DOOR CREAKING] Well, the tide went down. When the light is split into prisms, it travails and the layers of your pregnancies, will be transformed into joys and may they be multiplied. And let the suffering, in which you shall give birth to your children, become pleasure of the body. Silly book really has ahold on you, doesn't it? This silly book just happens to be the source of half the theories on which I'm basing my book. Just be the key to the mystery of the witch's light. It was written by this really obscure German writer. - It's never been translated. - No wonder. [MACHINE WHIRRING] [CARS PASSING BY] [SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC] Miss, you all right? You all right, miss? Didn't hit you or anything, did it? Yeah, it didn't hit you coming down. - You sure you're all right? - Yeah. No, I'm okay. Thank you. - You sure? - Thank you. Okay, great. [INDISTINCT CHATTER] Please, can I have my ball back? - Thank you. - Till we meet again, Tommy. - How do you know my name? - I know a lot of things. But you better hurry back. Your sister bought a present for you. LESLIE: Gary, I hope you realize how much I appreciate you coming here to do these pictures for my book. It really means a lot to me 'cause... I believe in what I'm writing, but I need proof. It's just sometimes I feel confused, even scared to find what I'm looking for. I think you're gettin' a little carried away here, honey. You've been stressed out for weeks now. In my opinion, all those book you've been reading on esoteric sciences are not doing a damn bit of good. You know what's weird though? What? I studied the hotel from every angle. That light we see shining in the upstairs window at noon, there doesn't seem to be anything to cause it. Hey, thanks for bringing me here too. I mean, the place is absolutely incredible. I promise I'm gonna get some really good pictures for you. Great. It's also kind of a nice chance for us to get away together, you know, alone? You know, I've been thinkinga lot about us lately and... Oh, here it is. There's an infantile superstition of the human spirit. That virginity can be a virtue and not the barrier that separate signorance from knowledge. See, even your poet knows virginity is not natural for a grown woman. You know, this could bethe perfect vacation. Just don't start, please. You gotta admit that beinga virgin at your age - is just not... - Just drop it! Okay? Okay. Sorry. Forget it. WOMAN: What on earth possessed you to want to buy this place? It's a marvelous deal. Fifty miles from Boston. The perfect place for a private club. I mean... quite exclusive. Oh, we're gonna rebuild everything. Of course, your father has been skeptical from the start, but he'll soon see I was right. I'm going to make it look fabulous! Just forget the whole thing. What, Freddy? The architect broke his stupid leg today. He's at Boston Generalup to his butt in plaster. So, no architect, no site review, no trip to the island. Never say die, Freddy. We'll change architects. A friend of mine told me about the most marvelous person. And the Taylors used the same one for that palace of theirs in Florida. I know I wrote it down here somewhere. Here it is. [TELEPHONE RINGING] Could you get that? - John, was that the phone? - No. [TELEPHONE RINGING] - Hello. - I'll get it. Hello. This is Mr. Brooks calling. We need an estimate on a hotel my wife is interested in. And, um... the Taylors referred us to you. You said you got my name from the Taylors? I don't know anyone named Taylor. [INAUDIBLE SPEECH] That would be fine. I have tomorrow off, I'll meet you then. Fine, so we'll see you tomorrow. All right. Thank you. Bye-bye. - I'm sorry, John. - I get it. I have to go. You have to work. No. I want you to stay tonight. But, um... I can't play with you tomorrow. Because I have to work. I'll never understand which you love more. Work or sex. [CHUCKLES] Well, you of all people should be able to answer that. LESLIE: Unruly lust may be loosed in the bones of a seasoned woman. May virtue be as wax in the heat of your want on flames. What if I just kind of get under the covers? [WAVES CRASHING] Come on, be good and go back to your sleeping bag. Please. [WAVES CRASHING] Seriously, Leslie, I am really concerned about you. I think we should talk about this. I don't want to talk about it. I want to go to bed. Good night, Gary. GARY: Good night, Leslie. LADY IN BLACK: We whispered and we talked... [INDISTINCT SPEECH] [SPEAKING GERMAN] [CONTINUES TALKING] [ENGINE REVVING] [WIND BLOWING] MAN: I'm sorry, I won't be able to stay and help you. But my son Jerry will be able to help you very nicely. We're one family. Hope you like the house. It was nice to meet you. Nice meeting you, sir. - Take care. Bye-bye. - Thank you. [DOOR CLOSES] [CLEARS THROAT] I'm supposed to be showing you the property. Mr. Brooks. Mrs. Brooks. I think you're making a really great choice here. Um... Good exposure, all the rooms have an ocean view. We even have electricity now. We just had it hooked up. And I think you're making a super investment. I think you've got a great nose for business. Oh, I certainly do. But, uh... First we'll see the place and then we'll decide. LESLIE: Voracious and wicked nature, your greedy appetite is never sated. Even before you savored the fruit in its entirety, again you desire it. More than before, and on into and again. Without end. Gary? Hi! My name is Sydney, what's yours? Tommy. - Do you live here? - No, but my dad wants to buy this island right there. You shouldn't live here. That's a bad place. My mommy told me a witch lives there. Bye, Tommy. Jane! Hurry, Gary! It will be gone in a couple of seconds! [CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS] [CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS] [CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS] We should try tomorrow from another angle. You got your witch's light on film. It's fantastic. God, you look beautiful like that. Stay right there. [CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS] Come on, open your eyes. Come on, Gary. Come on, open your eyes. Stop it! Okay? - Mr. Brooks? - Yeah. I'm sorry I'm late. I'm sorry. I'm never late. I had a hell of a time getting here. Don't give it another thought, Linda. - I may call you Linda? - Oh, sure. Come on, let's go. We've already wasted half an hour. I'm really sorry. The traffic was terrible! Now I'm gonna need an estimateon the cost of the renovation. But just remember one thing Miss Donovan. We are not millionaires. Yet. Why was it so difficult to find someone to take us to this island? Oh, you know, sailors are weird, superstitious. They've got a bunch of legends about this island. Witches and rainbows and shit. If you want my opinion, you're gonna make a killing on this place. Okay, push this button here, that will make... the tape start, so you can hear music. Then push stop. And this button here is so you can record your own voice. Jane loves Tommy very much. Then we can play it back. [CLICKS] Jane loves Tommy very much. I love you, Jane. I love you, Jane. I love you, Jane. I love you, Jane. I love you, Jane. - Do you want some coffee? - No, thanks. That's amazing these old projectors. God knows how this thing got here, but I'd sure like to get it to work. Shit! Somebody is coming. - So what? - It's a private island. I know. I thought you asked permission to visit the island and do research. - I did. - So? They didn't give it to me. Oh, God, you're a genius forgetting us into trouble. [SEAGULLS SCREECHING] Come on. Listen, if you're not back here before low tide, I'm leaving without you. We'll be back, Sam. Scout's honor. I mean it. Hard-nosed bastard! Well, it's your own damn fault, Rose. If you had given him a decent tip, he would've softened up. ROSE: I thought it was in better shape! JERRY: Oh, don't worry about that. A coat of paint and this place will be good as new. And look at that view! Quiet, tranquil, isolated. Let's have a look inside. I think you're gonna change your mind as soon as you see the interior. You know, this place is quite a find... Oh, you folks are gonna be very happy with this investment. I think with just a few minor renovations you'll find that... [THUD] it virtually pays for itself. I think in about a year, you'll be living here rent-free. Let's take a look at the grand salon . You'll find that this room is quite spacious, as all the rooms on this floor are. [ROSE SIGHS] This place is a wreck! It's going to cost me a goddamn fortune to fix it up. That you bought for a sumway below.... below market value. It was a lucky coincidence. The owners were desperate to sell. In fact, had they given us any kind of a time frame, we could've gotten double what we paid for it. We were very shrewd to grabit when we did, sight unseen. - You really think so? - [SCOFFS] You think I don't know? No doubt about it. Well, now let's go check out that kitchen. It's newly renovated, pipes and wiring, has a wonderful double gas stove and a really... [INDISTINCT CHATTER] This house shouldn't cost that much to rebuild. The structure has good bones. Well, maybe so, but it looks like a lot of work to me. MR. BROOKS: This place gives me the shivers. Don't worry about that. Have the heating fixed up in a snap. [PANTING] [DOOR CREAKING] - You live here? - Nobody lives here, Tommy. Nobody. [SEAGULLS SCREECHING] [SIGHS] Just figures these people would turn up today. They couldn't wait until tomorrow, we're leaving anyway. I think we should just make a run for it. Got plenty of pictures, jump in the Zodiac, out of here. They'll nail us and figure we're thieves. That's a dumb idea. That's a dumb idea. What do you suggest? - Let's wait until they leave. - Shit! [WHISPERS] The hot plate. MR. BROOKS: It's still hot. Someone's been here, just now. Or... someone lives here. It's impossible. I assure you, nobody has been here. Besides, my father would have told me. No one's lived here for years. Years! The last person, that's what they say, was a woman, a movie actress. She was shooting a picture here and fell in love with the place. I mean, really, let's face it. This is a wonderful building. Have you ever seen such elegance? Anyway, I guess she decided to pack it in and stay here. - Alone? - Well, that I don't know. All I know is she must have been a little crazy. My father remembers her. He saw her in the movies when he was a kid. In the end, she was kind of like, um... like Gloria Swanson. In Sunset Boulevard. Well, if this is her, got to give her credit. Not bad. They say at a certain point she quit the movies all together, because she didn't want people to see her getting old. Her last picture never even came out! I guess she paid off the producers not to put it on the market. At any rate, by the time she retired, she was already... retirement age. She couldn't possibly still be alive. LINDA: And if she were? [SIGHS] Aah! [PANTING] [PANTING] [WATER SPLASHING] Oh! [SCREAMING] [SCREAMING] [SCREAMING CONTINUES] [LAUGHTER] [INDISTINCT CHATTER] [INDISTINCT CHATTER] [INDISTINCT CHATTER] [CHATTER CONTINUES] [SCREAMS] [ANGRY SCREAMS] [JANE GASPS] [GASPING] [EVIL LAUGHTER] [THUD] JANE: No! My baby. What are you talking about, dear? Jane, calm down, honey. - What happened? - I...I don't know. I don't know. It's like something pulled me down in there. Are you okay now? Come on downstairs and we'll lie down. I don't know what happened, but I am not crazy! Uh, the tide's going out. I think we'd all better get back to the boat. Yes, good idea. I think I've had enough of this island. - GARY: Hey, they're leaving. - LESLIE: Great! I think I have enough for my book. I don't feel like hanging around here anymore. - Let's just go. - Okay. I'll go get the hot plate, unless they made off with it. Now what do we do? I told you to tip him! Jane isn't well, we have to get back to Boston. Daddy, I'm all right. Don't worry. But I want to get off the island right now! Sir, I just don't think that's feasible right now. Why don't we all go back in the house and wait? When my father finds out we're not back yet, he'll take care of everything. I certainly hope so. You know, this is all your fault, you trusted that idiot. Nice lady, huh? Don't envy you having to work with her for the next 6 months. TOMMY: She told me she lived here for years and years. But I met her yesterday in a park. JANE: What did she look like? TOMMY: Pretty old and dressed in black. Look, there she is, the woman in black. - [GARY WHISTLING] - [FOOTSTEPS] - Oops! - Who are you? Uh... Hi, my name is Gary. I'm a photographer and I came to the island with a friend of mine to shoot some pictures of that crazy witch's light. You know very well that this is private property and you're not supposed to be here without permission. - What witch's light? - Oh, nothing. It's an old wives' tale. Told you, people in this area have very weird superstitions. And that's why I was determined to visit this island. It's a mystery which fascinates me. Oh, all right. What the hell? Goddamn it, the mystery now is how to get off this island! I can help you there. My Zodiac is parked outside. Obviously, we can't all fit. But, uh... I can make a run, send somebody back. Just look at that sea. We'll never get off this island in no rubber dinghy. Don't worry anybody. As soon as my dad realizes we are not back yet, he'll take care of everything. Great. Meanwhile, why don't I do the honors of the house and rustle up some coffee. Umm... [CLEARS THROAT] I doubt if that's working. How did you guess? Okay, you can go home now. I'm gonna stay for a while. Good night. Mrs. Brooks, would you like some coffee? She better not. We don't want to strain my wife's nerves. My nerves are just fine! A stinking lousy headache. That's foul! Well, if you really don't feel well, why don't you go upstairs and lie down for a while. After all, it is a hotel. Jane, give me one of your pills. My pills, I had them when I was.... When I fainted in the bathroom. Well then, they must still be there. - I'll go get them. - Thank you, Tommy. Looking for this? Yes, thank you. - Do you wanna meet my parents? - No, not yet, Tommy. There's no hurry. See, I was right. It fell on the floor and Tommy found them right away. No, the woman in black gave them to me. Stop this nonsense! You hear me? Tommy, come here. You're a good boy, okay? Look at me. I'm gonna get some rest, somewhere. God knows how long we're gonna be stranded here. [FOOTSTEPS] Oh, I wouldn't mind if we have to spend the whole night here. Would you? [SCREAMING LOUDLY] [SCREAMING CONTINUES] [VERY LOUD SCREAMS] [DOOR CREAKING] So, in just a few more months, you're gonna have a niece or nephew to play with. - Does that make you happy? - Yes. I have to go to the bathroom. Do you know where it is? - Yes. - Okay. [JANE SIGHS] So, do you believe in paranormal phenomena? What do you mean? Well, do you study professionally or is it a hobby? You know, witches, spirits, spells, unexplainable events. Yeah, I studied it for so many years, I definitely believe in it. What does this island have to do with it? Because they say on this island many witch burnings have taken place. And the book you're translating? Oh, it's an old German text, about a woman accused of witchcraft. She was pregnant. And so preferred to take her own life, rather than burn at the stake. And all this took place on anisland in a new world. It was exactly like this one. [MUSIC PLAYS ON FILM REEL] I didn't touch it. I swear. [WOMAN SINGING EERIE SONG] [SONG CONTINUES] There's three doors to hell. The first door needs to grieve. [MUFFLED SCREAMS] That one will be closed now forever. [MUFFLED SOBS] [SOBBING CONTINUES] [EVIL LAUGHTER] [EVIL LAUGHTER] [MUFFLED SOBS] [CRYING IN PAIN] [LAUGHTER] [EVIL LAUGHTER] [EVIL LAUGHTER] [WOMAN SPEAKING GERMAN] [CONTINUES SPEAKING] [SPEAKING ENDS] Oh, it's so cold! There's a fireplace. Why don't we use it? It'll keep us warm while we wait. JERRY: That sounds like a good idea. [MUFFLED MOANING] That chair looks just like the thing. Don't tell your wife. She will probably make me pay for it. There's a lot of smoke. You know, it probably hasn't been used in years. It's a storm. Low pressure. [MOANING] It's beginning to drop now. [LINDA LAUGHING] [SIGHS] That is really pretty. - Is it old? - I don't know. - Do you wear it all the time? - Mm-hmm. Even in bed? [SIGHS] I want to go look for Tommy, maybe he's with Rose. You go, I want to read this. [INDISTINCT CHATTER] [LAUGHS] I'm gonna go stretch out, getting kind of tired. Yeah, I think I'll do the same thing. Safe to say, we're stuck here for the night. Mr. Brooks... will you come and knock on my door when the cavalry gets here? Sure will. Thanks. Good night. I'd like to know what that chair was made out of. Wood sure smells funny. It's colder tonight. Stop! [WIND BLOWING] Gary, wait! Tommy? [FOOTSTEPS] Tommy? [DOOR CREAKING] [DOOR CREAKING] Oh, my goodness, not again! A hundred rooms and not one bed. Who needs a bed? [INDISTINCT, GARBLED SPEECH] [GARBLED SPEECH CONTINUES] [SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY] - Where did everybody go? - I don't know. Tommy, where have you been? I've been looking everywhere for you. You know better than that, Tony. Those are killer waves out there. If it'd make you feel any better, I'll take a spin around, see if I can find Sam. I don't know what's bothering you. They're in a hotel. Are you getting superstitious on me, huh? The second door, is the door of lust, which is the desire of the flesh. There's always a flame. [WIND BLOWING] [LOUD SCREAMS] JERRY: Where are we? What the hell is going on? LINDA: How is this possible? [PANTING] [LINDA SCREAMING] JERRY: Linda? Linda? Linda? [KNOCKS ON DOOR] Giordano? Linda? Where the devil are you? [ECHOING SCREAMS] Linda? Linda! Linda. Linda! JERRY: Linda! JERRY: [MUTTERING PRAYER] Oh, dear God in heaven. [SCREAMING] [FOOTSTEPS] [DOOR CREAKING] Giordano? Linda? [SCREAMING] Linda! [SCREAMING] Linda! Sam you say? No, I don't think he's at the island. They saw his boat going in the opposite direction this afternoon! Are you sure it was Sam's boat? I didn't see it myself, but the Foxy Lady is hard to mistake. Would you take me to the island in your boat? I'm afraid my son is stuck out there. I am sorry, Mr. Giordano, but it would be suicide to try to go out there now. - It's blowing up a storm! - I'll pay you anything. I wouldn't live to spend it. You know, Tommy, when I was a kid, I was just like you. I had lots of friends and I'd talk to them, and sometimes they'd talk back to me. And I did all the voices just like you. Only I never had this old lady who was dressed in black. There was one guy named Captain Nemo, and Captain Nemo was a big, fat dude. He was so fat, when he sat around the house, - he sat around the... - Gary? Did you get it? Around the house? I'll be right back. Do not forget it. Yo, what's up? MR. BROOKS: The strangest thing just happened. [SCREAMING IN PAIN] [SCREAMING CONTINUES] The room went suddenly dark. And I walked in and they were gone! Maybe they just wanted to be alone. Jesus Christ! Help me get her down, will you? [PANTING] Blood of a virgin... [SCREAMING] [SCREAMING IN PAIN] [SCREAMING] [PANTING] Jerry? Um... what's that? [SCREAMING] It's Jerry. We've gotta get outta here. - We've gotta get out of here! - Stop! Stop! Stop it! Leslie! Leslie? Thank God, you're all right! All right, listen to me. Linda and Jerry have been killed. Now, you get dressed. We've got to find a way out of here. LESLIE: The upside down cross where Jerry was burned, and Linda's slashed throat. It's all part of an ancient ritual. A satanic ritual. [GASPS] Where's Rose? She may be in trouble, we have to go look for her. [METAL CLINKING] Ah! [GASPING] [SCREAMING] We're trapped! We're trapped in this place. Gary, we've got to get off this island! We'll never make it in the Zodiac. Wait a minute, wait a minute. Maybe we can get a message out. [WAVES CRASHING] Hold this. I got it. Damn it! They're soaking wet! Here, use this. Thanks. Lets pray someone is out there to see this. All right! Come on, let's get back inside. I am worried about the others. - Dad? - What do you want? Why aren't you in bed? Somebody is sending signals from the island. Jesus, if you didn't watch those cruddy movies, you wouldn't be getting nightmares. - Ah, Dad, listen! - You listen. You go to bed. You need your sleep. [PHONE RINGING] [PHONE RINGING] [PHONE RINGING] [PHONE RINGING] [GARBLED VOICE ON RECORDER] Doesn't make any sense. It's just... incomprehensible sounds. No, let me hear it again, it sounds like German. You know, this could be the key to what is going on here. My son and those other people are in danger! I saw that flare with my very eyes. - You have to do something. - No. No. I believe you, but how can I get out there? God almighty can't even handle that sea. Well, think of something! My son could be in danger. You don't want that on your conscience. [SPEAKING IN GERMAN] Fire from the greedy... [SPEAKING IN GERMAN] Lust from the harlot... [SPEAKING IN GERMAN] Fruit of the woman in labor. [SPEAKING IN GERMAN] And the blood of a virgin. These are all elements of witchcraft. There is a common denominatorin all the mystery cults. Blood of a virgin. 'F' for fear. 'B' for blood. LESLIE: Seems to be a very unusual kind of spell. You all right? [ECHOING] It's nothing. JANE: What do you think it means? [ECHOING] What do you think it means? [ECHOING] LESLIE: I really don't know. [ECHOING] I really don't know. [ECHOING] [FOOTSTEPS] [WHEEZING] [WHEEZING] Brooks? Mr. Brooks. [WHEEZING] Dad, what's wrong? [WHEEZING] Mr. Brooks! It's okay. Gary. Gary! All right. Okay. GARY: Ughh! [JANE PANTING] [MOANING] [PANTING] - [HELICOPTER WHIRRING] - Listen. Listen. It worked! It's a helicopter. [GASPS] [GASPS] GARY: Come on. I don't see anything. I don't see any boat. ALL: Hey! Hey! GARY: Move. Move! [HELICOPTER WHIRRING] [SCREAMS] GARY: Hey! Hey! LESLIE: Hey! LESLIE: Hey! Wind's comin' up. We better head back. No place we can land now anyway. Yeah, maybe you're right. Hey! Wait a minute. I saw something. ALL: [SCREAMING] Hey! There's something there. No! I don't see anything. I thought I caught a flash of something. But I guess it was just a reflection. They probably already landed down the coast a bit. Go home. Your son will be waiting for you. GARY: Hey! They're leaving. Oh, God, help us, they're leaving! God, what do we do now? Look, there she is, the woman in black! All right, stay here. Stay here. Stay together. LESLIE: Hey, wait Gary! That's not her. LESLIE: [WHISPERING] Gary? Look! The window's not broken anymore. GARY: Come on! [FOOTSTEPS] [FOOTSTEPS] [DOOR CREAKING] [WIND BLOWING OUTSIDE] [FOOTSTEPS] I've been waiting for you. I chose you all carefully. Your weak souls are the source of my existence. And this body, a vessel that shall contain them, and carry out my tasks. Come on, Jane, let's get out of here. [WINCING IN PAIN] There are three doors to the dark side. Lust, avarice and ire. Linda for the lust, and Rose for greed, and ire of the persecuted witch. Add Jane's baby, and the one element that unites and completes the rest. The loss of purity. Yours does it. - It's locked... - Let's go! [EVIL LAUGHTER] GARY: Shit! Tommy. - He's with Jane. - You get the Zodiac ready. I'll be back. Go! Tommy? Oh! Tommy? Tommy? Tommy! Tommy... Tommy! Aah! Aah! Ugh... [EVIL LAUGHTER] [LAUGHTER CONTINUES] Gary? Tommy? It's me, Leslie, it's Gary. LESLIE: Oh, thank God! [LESLIE SCREAMS] [EVIL LAUGHTER] [GASPING FOR BREATH] [GASPING] Jane! No, Tommy! It's not Jane! No, Tommy! Oh! [SCREAMING] VOICE ON RECORDER: I love you, Jane. I love you, Jane. I love you, Jane. I love you, Jane. I love you, Jane. I love you, Jane. I love you, Jane. [WINCING IN PAIN] Good news. Tommy is fine, you can leave the hospital. You don't have to worry. It won't have any effect on the baby. My baby? [GASPS] |
